What's this? + Oil question.

I just put in a new oil seal at the differential, and noticed this. There is a cable that seems to be linked to the front brakes, but it's a mystery to me otherwise. Does anyone know what the little block is for?






And another thing; I'm not quite sure what oil to put into the gear box and the differential. The differential oil smelled exactly like gear oil, so I'm pretty sure that's what goes in. But what's now in the gear box smells quite like motor oil. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? The guy that sold me the van was not exactly sure about it so I thought I might ask here. I have no idea if the preferred oil is the same for every type of Commer (kind of feel like an idiot for saying that, but hey you have to learn sometime)

Yep it's engine oil (20/50) in the gearbox and EP90 in the axle. Not an idiot at all, you don't know until you ask:). The device you've found underneath is a switch that operates the brake lights when you apply the handbrake, bit of a mystery why they did it:confused:
 
the little box is a switch. It puts the brake lights on when the handbrake is applied.
The gearbox does indeed use engine oil. A 20w50 does it.
the rear diff uses a hypoid gear oil.
 
Just to add to the axle oil discussion make sure it is ep 90 and not ep80/90 the latter easily found on the shelf but ep 90 might have to be ordered

Hi Sandra, I got some ep90 off eBay.
 
Those handbrake switch thingys seem to be a bit of a Commer thing. My Karrier Bantam has one as well. I leave it disconnected, and just use it to test the brake lights.
