oil pump...

Measured the tolerances on the oil pump and all very tight except the gap between the face and the casing at 0.10mm where it should be between 0.025 and 0.075. Think that's an issue and should I replace it. The short block is off Friday for a rebuild so would need it quick as want to send the pump and dizzy with it so they can set the timing up...never done it so rather they got it right for me. Thoughts?

It's running well thanks - just fitting an oil pressure gauge to make sure all's good before any big runs - seem to be ok :)

yep - the coil was fine, all down to the dizzy. I think it was the dizzy cap to be honest as the pins were pretty worn and burnt out though it was replaced probably about 3000 miles ago so not that new really but shouldn't have worn so much - the slight movement in the shaft I think was wearing the pins why went for a full dizzy kit for the sake of £70. Runs perfect again now :). I just need to be sure the oil pressure is satisfactory so going to take it back to the builders to test with a calibrated gauge. When I said fitting an oil gauge, I meant I fitted one this week from my other van that happened to have a Smiths one in the dash but wasn't connected up (makes me think may not be working right). Put a new sender for the light and PRV both from Martin - I'm not sure what the blow off for the new valve is - it is the one with a nipple on the nut  but Martin says it should be a higher pressure valve.
It's ticking over in the garage at 30 psi cold and about 25 psi warm - but not driven it yet to get the oil proper hot. On revving it's going up to 40-45 when warm - will be taking it for a run today or tomorrow to have a look.

Only thing I could check is the oil feed for the chain is fitted right but I'd rather not remove that the pulley and cam cover - however if that was missing or broken I'd have thought the pressure would be very low?

How's that pressure sound?

That sounds spot on, manual says 41/45psi when hot:)
Cant find out what the relief valve is set to though - but that should only operate if he filter is blocked anyway.

thanks Panky - just need to wire up the tacho next - I guess should be 41-45 above 2000-2500 revs?

I get confused with the oil pressure stuff - I've found stuff from Rootes to garages about garages changing PRV's to the old 1600 PSV which raises oil pressure to 50psi which would suggest the PSV is operating during normal running and other modifying the valve to get higher pressure - all very confusing.

So plan is to wire up the tacho - set the engine up with the Colourtune, timing light and reset the tappets down a thou when hot (I clean out the rocker shaft and re-torqued the head) get it on a run to get the oil proper hot - note the pressures at rest and while driving and if any dodge back to the garage for a proper pressure check.

Dropped the latest oil last night and very very small amount of metal filings on the magnet so happy nothing going wrong internally.

You could be right about the valve, after all the pressure would go high with cold oil. The manual(Hunter) doesn't say at what revs but I assume it's pressure at running speeds. Does say that pressure is for a new engine

Yer the engine should be as new I hope.

God my posts are badly written - I think I need to adopt less is more mentality rather than hammering them out at work :)
