Newbie help South East

Hello Commer owners,

My wife and I have been discussing getting a camper for a few years and have just started looking into it more seriously. This week we stumbled upon Commer on the Internet and both felt this was the one!

Then we got disappointed when we realised that they are not that easy to find (as vw). Then we got scared by the pictures of rust on this forum.

We are complete camper novices and I have zero knowledge of engines and bodywork and are starting to flounder before we've begun.

I was wondering, is there a Commer owner near us who would let us look at one in the flesh and have chat about buying, ownership and maintenance?

We live in Bromley.

You have made a very wise decision but yes Commers do rust - but so does every classic car, it's just Commer rust has a lot more class:cool:
Hopefully someone near you will come to you aid and show you the ropes, unfortunately I'm on the other side of the country so cant be of any help with that:( But once you've got your van I'm usually around to confuse you. good luck.
 
Hi welcome aboard! Hope you find the info you need to make a decision. As Martin says I recently discovered my old van Ran the van now Margo is living with glamper van people she was a great van ! With overdrive,we now have six speed conversion & All manor of things available.
Ran was at Martin Maltas for the first ever cvf meet when there were only a few of us!there will be a whole readers ride thread somewhere.She even gets a mention in classic van & pick up magazine.
I sold her to buy sybhil a tax exempt version as I do not earn much! Then sold Sybhil to go & rescue The Colonel my present wreck he is the best yet that's him to the left.

We're pretty close to you - Welling, Kent - if you want to see one in the flesh. She's a bit of an ongoing project (wasn't mean to be, long story!) and not currently being driven but not far off. She's a Dodge Spacevan Autosleeper.

Certainly not an expert though and still getting to grips with a fair bit of it ourselves.

However there's a lot of great info/help on here and spares are a lot easier and cheaper to get than similar VW parts.

That was us 6 years ago. Hobbies cost money, comer ownership is a good hobby but cheaper than many;) we are near Brighton if any good. You are welcome to look but I am one of the least knowledgeable on the forum:D With the burst brake pipe during the Mot busy getting new brake lines at the mo.

If you find one buy it as you don't know when the next will be along. I went on 650 mile round trip to get ours (100 on a tow truck;)). We have a rolling restoration which with a friendly mechanic stays on the road. I think the general advice would be to get the best bodywork and chassis you can as mechanical stuff can often be sorted more easily............expert and knowledgable people may Correct me though:rolleyes:

Panels and parts available so definitely a wise choice.

There is a good buyers guide on a sticky so look at that. With the many knowledgable people on the forum most things can be sorted with a bit of patience.

We're in Newbury, Berkshire. Couldn't get to your neck of the woods for a while due to work and other commitments but if you have time, you're welcome to come and have a look at our Clara. Or if you can wait we can bring her to come and visit but I'm not sure when it would be.
