weird starting problem

Hi Gang,
Please can I request you're collective wisdom on a little starting problem that Jessica seems to have acquired.

Sometimes she starts really well - turns over really fast etc. , others she just slowly turns over and goes nowhere - a few times I have had to resort to launching her down the hill I live on, but I can't keep doing this as the neighbours probably don't want me to crash into their car (again).

After a short run (no where near enough to charge a flat battery) she will start first time.

Any ideas?

ta

my van did this when i first had it, turned out to be a bad connection on the earth strap to the engine, i cleaned the connections to bare metal and copper greased them, was fine after this?:).

oops - the 'again' bit sounds a bit worrying:I

Earth sounds possible - Bessie had some slow turning over problems which were down to wear in the starter motor brushes - but she was fairly consistently slow.

oil getting on the starter terminals can also cause an insulation and sounds wierd but the battery terminals can also have a short if the terminals are greased as the grease warms it seeps between the post and terminals, or take the starter out and clean the face and bolts as it earths throught the engine block.

all sound like good tips - I'll have a look tomorrow

studio, yeah the again is for real.

I bought myself a nice sensible Skoda Octavia a couple of years ago, it was all nice and lovely, but the clip on the compartment on top of the centre arm rest was broken, so I got a new one, fitted it and then enjoyed some relaxed driving on the way home....

So I pulled up at home, parked it in front of the house and went in...

frantic knocking on the door from the neighbour, my car was rolling down the hill and bouncing off the neighbours car...

so now I know you can't put the handbrake on properly if you have the arm rest down...

lesson learnt - keep it in gear:I
