Walk Thru Commer Call!

HI,
we just bought an earl '70s long wheel base walk-thru. It is beautiful but needs a bit of work. It was imported from n. ireland in 74 i think but we don't know its exact age. It has always been a motorhome as far as we can tell and we hope to take it on the road with our 4 soon to be 5 kids next summer. Is there anyone out there with the knowledge who could give us some restoration tips? Or anybody else with a walk-thru? they seem a bit thin on the ground these days.... Workshop manuals? we can't find any....! also how can we find out its exact age... could be tax free! anyway glad to find this forum and hope to hear from yous soon.
Big Love

Hello
i've been running a walk thru for 11 years now and would be happy to help you out.
if you want to find out the year of manufacture (should be earlier than the first use and could be the difference in getting free tax), send your chassis number off to:

Renault VI UK ltd
Boscombe Rd
Dunstable
Beds LU5 4LX

tel. 01582 47 11 22

this should be correct, but might have changed. don't know if he'll still be there but the bloke who told me when my van was made was called Colin Hope.

what sort of engine have you got? perkins diesel or petrol? Diperk now deal with Perkins engines (01733 334 500). petrol engine is the same for other Rootes vehicles (humber snipe)

basic manuals for the Walk Thru crop up on ebay occasionally. if you're desperately after a workshop manual i do have one i could copy - i think this is for the petrol and perkins 4.203 engines.

brakes, steering parts, king pins, etc see Powertrack (http://www.powertrackbrakes.co.uk/) - very helpful and well priced, bought brake cylinders, king pins and track rods of these over the years.

other parts from: http://www.rootesparts.com/

exhaust - took my old one down to SDL in Bristol and matched it up with one off a Merc diesel.

lever arm shock absorbers can be reconditioned, brake shoes can be taken out and recovered, bearings can be sourced from a good bearing company.

insurance: got mine from AON (about £80/£85 a year)

got a bit carried away with info... feel free to send me an email. where abouts are you based?

Hi

are you still active on this page? I am trying to locate the chassis number on the chassis of my 64’ walk thru. Do you have any info on this please?? Cheers
Just saw this - the chassis plate is just a riveted piece of sheet metal, by the passenger foot well, I think (have taken mine off) - that's it as far as identification.
How's it going? I've finally got plans to get mine back on the road, having sold it to the business, I intend to get it back to doing furniture deliveries...
