trip to scotland

we are planning on taking toby up to west coast of scotland in a few weeks. can anyone recommend any good campsites or places to stop? at the yoxall meet i know someone was talking to me about a good site i think near fort william but i can not remember where or who:I

i do not think we will go much further than fort william, poss may head to fort william and then accross to east side to come back down? we had thought we would spend odd nights just in layby's/picnic areas however off what i have read on tinternet it seems that is getting difficult to do that now? anyone any thoughts?

Hi Jules,

we have just returned from a Tour right around Scotland in the Commer (Glasgow - Pitlochry - Thurso - Durness - Lochinver - Ullapool - Speyside - Glasgow) , will post photos soon...

I reccomend the following campsites as tried and tested by ourselves over the years:

Red Squirrel Campsite Glencoe (great views but can be busy) - see: http://www.redsquirrelcampsite.co.uk/

Then take the Corrin Ferry (£12 from memory) over onto Sunart Peninsula (stunning!)and stay at the Resipole Campsite (you can pick mussels off the beach here) - see: http://www.resipole.co.uk/

Follow the road north (A 861) through Moidart, this is really a very nice part of Scotland, stunning views and not a lot of people. You can then head East to Fort William (personally I have never stayed there just stocked up on supplies, it gets very busy at this time of year and is full of climbers and coach parties).

Furter East on the A86 there is another very nice campsite at Roybridge see: http://www.bunroycamping.co.uk/index.htm

If you are going to continue East from here can I reccomend that once joining the A9 you come South a little to take in Pitlochry and then Aberfeldy where a busy but really nice Council Run site exists,

The beauty with Aberfeldy is that you can park up and then walk into the lovely town, walk along the river, we really liked it there when we stayed for a week last summer.

From here if you head along the north or south road of Loch Tay (South is single track, but worth it, then down to Callander, which can be busy with tourists but a nice site near by is:

Hi Jules,

I would phone ahaead the night before for the one in Glen Coe, it gets very busy this time of year. You might want to check with the others but we hardly ever do this, sometimes we plan to stay one night and end up staying for five, means you can be more flexible but also may turn up at a "site-full" sign.

Here are some photos from our trip this summer, a lot further north than you are thinking of going but a good reason to come back for another trip perhaps??

This is us at Dunnet Head in Caithness, it is the most northerly point of the Bristish Mainland. We tow a small vintage car we have, means we can park up the van and the whizz round the lanes in the Austin...

Best place this year was Achmelvich Campsite north of Lochinver, stayed for a week, sandy beaches and stunning views, see below:

We did just over 1100 miles towing the Austin, was slow going at points but great fun, no problems with either vehicles.

def wow! looks absolutely stunning and van looks great with your car behind.

makes me very tempted to go a bit further but maybe best leave that for another time.

Bill, there are more than 2 lovely motors at Ruairdh's house - the garage is full of lovely vehicles!

will do, thanks. still unsure whether to come down and have night or so in edinburgh- love edinburgh and think fringe will still be on. but will have diesel and cities and dogs don't mix that well. i think we have your tel number somewhere will take it with us and give you a ring if we around your way sure sam will be happy for some child company by then.

Hi Julie - stunning part of the world - stayed at a quiet campsite right next to the beach just up over the hill from Arisaig - was sometime ago now so contact details long since lost but if still there was a nice spot with views over to the Islands :) am sure you'll have a cracking time wherever you end up - beautiful part of the world.

Glad you all enjoyed the photos, sorry to take so long to reply but we have been away again. I can fully reccomend exploring Scotland in a Commer we love it! See our older posting aboutthe Trip around the Isle of Mull last Easter.

I organise a big Rally for Austin Sevens near Perth which is what we were heading for when Mactosh saw us.


Lancealot,

towing the car is a slow process and keeps me on my toes, braking is okay but I am comparing it to the Austin. We average around 19mpg with this setup, less on single track roads as I am constantly changing gear. The van will sit at 55mph on straight sections of faster roads but dies quickly on hills.

Rupert had a look over the van last year and suggested that it has a Humber Sceptre engine in it. It's fitted with an SU 'carb and has an aluminium head plus overdrive.

We intend to do many more trips and we'll keep posting pictures of the scenic bits, hope Juliedaisy has a good trip north!
