Hi,
I thought is was about time i got round to this. Rupert's a 1977 Viking conversion, as far as i can tell (a friend has a vw t2 viking with the same design roof, though his has solid boards, rather than canvas slings for beds).
He's got quite a lot to do to get him happy, but managed the trip from Cumbria to Liverpool with only one breakdown ;)
What do you guys think?

Motorhomes international, Buccaneer Spacemaker, very unusual. The sales bumph mention Viking as an associate. :)

I have an XPF reg, but thats a '69 Ambulance :)

Another Commer to the group, liking the van.

Starting to feel left out now, still not found my Van, but it will come i know.

Buccaneer spacemaker? I like it... So viking did conversions, but the roof comes from another m/f...

I notice that viking and buccaneer both have nautical associations - possibly cos the roof can be used as a sail ;)
 
I suspect that the reason the VW has solid boards for the bed is beacause there are two structural crossmembers in the roof which cannot be removed, so the roof is intact apart from a small opening in the middle. Another reason that the Commer is so much better as a campervan. ;)

The canvas beds are quite unnerving - the long metal posts which support the centre edges of the beds don't inspire a huge amount of confidence. Saying that, I've had a 15st drunk hauling himself up there without any breakages :)
I think for the near future, I'll concentrate on sorting out a bed in the main cabin and use the overhead area for storage. If any sprogs arrive on the scene, they can be lobbed up there too.

I remember sleeping on bunks like that, when i was small, not sure if i'd fancy it now, not after a glass of wine or 2 lol... Do you reckon you'll be at the Coventry Meet.

Nice looking van! I know what you mean about bunks. I've tried mine which are sound, but I wasn't totally convinced I was safe!

Like what Paul said, there's been a real flurry of new stuff over the last month or so which is great to see.

And I'm sure that the elevated section is considerably more roomy than almost all of the other elevating tops on the more "regular" vans - if not all of them. Soft side(s) of course which can be a challenge in rough wather, but that there is a lot of breathing space up there, I'm sure, which should make the camper feel bigger when parked up with the roof lifted. Really nice indeed.
