The Ambulance

The Ambulance now moves under it's own power, another Commer lives. Have not driven it far as it has a steering problem, and any advice would be appreciated.

The play in the steering column is a quarter turn when turned to the nearside with wheels straight ahead and the column will raise around 1/2", the rocker shaft assembly does not move until the slack has been taken up in the steering column.

I have tried moving the adjusting screw it has no affect on the shaft movement, so once again any advice will be appreciated.

It does sound like your steering box is pretty knackered, there should be very little, if any, movement up and down on the column and a quarter of a turn play is excessive. Make sure all the securing bolts are tight first then have someone turn the steering wheel from side to side so you can look underneath and see what's happening with the rest of the steering ball joints and relay levers.

Here's what one looks like stripped down

It sounds like the thrusts in your steering box are worn out :(
