sump gasket...

....just spent a good portion of today trying to fix a bad oil leak from the sump of my pb commer...bought a sump gasket set from speedys and after lots of messing got the sump off and cleaned both it and the mating face of the engine to being mint! used a small amount of sealer to stick the gaskets and cork main cap seals and a little blob on the point where gsk meets cork and guess what despite all care possible tis pi$$in out of the front cork seal, must either be seated badly or just cack, probably bit of both!!lol [:(!]

anyway does anyone have any suggestions as the groove in the main cap is far smaller than the cork seal, which then ends up getting squished in or not as the case may be! it seems a really poor set up??

can you get 1 piece moulded rubber ones as these seem far better??!

any help gratefully recieved!!:)

are the sump gaskets all the same ? is it possible you purchased the wrong one for the van?

Hi Braith, I found the Hunter manual gives a bit more detail on the sump gasket and it recommends that if you remove the sump to fix oil leaks you should remove front and rear main bearing caps and add sealer to the corners of the bearing recess, looks like there is a way for the oil to find it's way around the gasket. I've copied the relevant page but I'm afraid my scanner is bust so had to make do with a camera shot, hope this helps.

I have discovered the sumps are a slightly different configuration depending on whether it is a steel or alloy item. 2 of my engines are fitted with mild and one with alloy, although the block castings appear the same. Presumably the gaskets will be different. It would be worth asking your supplier if they list an alternative.

Cheers

crikey...thanks for the responses!

no havn't put on any pics yet...will get some sorted asap! for what they're worth!lol!

Panky, thanks for the pic, i'll look into that...

Interesting note about the different sumps as I was told that the engine is actually out of a hunter, howevere the sump appears original...and also gives some stunning clues as to why the engine was changed, looks like sometime in the past no.1 b/e let go big time as there is a 1/2 in hole in the baffle inside and many a dent from the inside out that have been brazed up!

very breifly about the van (JOG 891L) - it's rough!

But me and the g/f bought it off fleabay last year for 200 quid in april/may and went round ireland in it in july! we dragged it back from cornwall to staffordshire at 40mph (heavier than i thought) and sorted it out after it having not been on the road for 10+yrs....to be continued!

Could be that the sumps is warped from the damage or from the heat used when repairing it [:0]

haha!!!

Sussed and fixed:D

With some help from the wonderful Sarah at speedy spares...we got to the bottom of it and have fixed it this afternoon.

Engine was an alloy sumped engine and the commer sump, well, isn't!

So using the correct alloy sump gasket kit (the cork seals are a different size) we have oil in the engine and not everywhere else!

thanks for all the suggestions and thanks again to speedy's who sent the parts out in 20hrs flat[:0] and charged me nowt!

speedys by name speedy by nature!!
cool now when you have recovered pic's of your van :pDon't forget if you send some to admin he can add yours to the website [8D]inc any relevant history or collection scenario :)

can I ask how you went about getting the sump off, I am about to get the sump off the Dog and the steering struts are in the way, did you have to jack the engine up and swing the steering struts out of the way?

The Dog is home....

I know this posted a few days ago but seeing as it is not yet answered! I just had my sump off to enable getting in some new piston rings, all I had to do was take out the steering struts to get the clearance on the sump. Took a bit of figuring out to get that PERFECT angle to slip it away and free but it does work, just make sure you watch the clutch fluid line!!

There is NOTHING more AWESOME than a Commer Van!
