Strange power loss?!?

Hi all,

Winston (our Commer) has been running a dream since we replaced his Universal joint a few weeks ago. A couple of Cornwall/Devon camping trips already under our belt, flip the overdrive on and been sitting happily at 55-60(almost)mph.

Were planning to head to Dorset this weekend, however I’ve had a couple of strange and (to me) unexplainable issues over the past few days.

He has been driving fine most of the time but on Friday and again on Monday the following has occurred (I’m driving my commer most days at the mo as other car is in the shop)

All seems fine and then 15 min into my journey (sitting at around 50mph) the engine starts to splutter when accelerator is pressed, He continues to lose power in any gear until I’m finally at standstill. I switch off the engine for a couple of minutes and He’s fine again. This then happened again 3 days later. But has now been fine since Monday.

I know Weir changed the Carb and the fuel pump last year before we bought him. However I can’t help but think this is a carb related problem... the strange thing (to mee) is that it’s been running fine since.

Any Ideas??

have you got an inline fuel filter fitted as it sounds to me to be a very common rootes problem of snakesin in your tank. what it does is overtime the petrol takes the painted layer off the inside of your tank and your pump then sucks this through with the fuel causing restricted fuel flow. best thing to do if this is the problem is to remove your tank and either replace it with 1 of tims nice new ali ones or fill your tank with something like pea gravel and give it a good old shake as the gravel will dislodge any flakey paint. then also replace your inline filter as well.

same happened to me a couple of weeks ago, had to take the carb off 7 clean it, blew the jets through and fitted new in line filters....sweet now:D

we in Poole Dorset, kettles always on for fellow CVF's:D

No!!!! Don't use pea gravel unless you count every single piece in and out again to ensure none are left behind. Also, the gravel will break off in bits and cause mayhem.

Better to get a handful of nuts and bolts (make a note exactly how many) and do the same.

Ahhhhh, good suggestions everyone, THANKS!

This did first occur after a run on low petrol. I had a horrible feeling some debris may have been pulled into the engine.
It seems that this is a relatively common issue, and hopefully easily resolved.
I'll get my fisher price tool box out tonight and have a rummage.

Before I get home and have a look, could you tell me if the in line filters are commer specific or generic (easily picked up)?

Just get yourself any old in line filter the see through plastic ones a favorite so you can see whats going on inside it;)
Pea gravel is ok as long as you give the tank a good swill out with clean fuel after. Its been done on here before and they ratchet straped the tank to a cement mixer so it keeps goin round and round until its all dislodged.Its like bead blasting the inside of your tank!;)
 
When fitting the filter bear in mind that it will only flow one way, usually indicated by an arrow on the main body.

Our snake lies dormant for months then, without warning, sheds another piece of skin. I immediately recognise the symptoms. Where did I put that safety pin?
