Hopefully at the end of january we will be starting the restoration of Katy but one question still remains, do we put side doors on her and block the rear or keep things as they are?????

I thought I'd decided after chating to Panky and Martin at the NEC to keep things as they are, but chating to my friend who is going to be doing the major body work still thinks side doors are the way to go!

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated :)
 
Hi Scott,

Duke had a side door as you may well know? I can see both sides of the coin here. What we found is that having a side door meant that you living space was very restrictive at times especially when the bed was up. We couldn't use any cupboards easily whereas the Autosleeper allows you to have the bed up and still be able to move around and make Tea, wash up etc. Side doors are cool because you can park the van side on, open up the door, attatch your table to the door and stuff;)

My personal opinion would be to leave things the way they are intended for your van mate. Of course, anything can be done with a little planning;) as Duke was chopped and shaped uniquely by it's previous owners. The best possible layout that i can think of is if Autosleeper and Martin Walter Dormobile put their heads together:p now that would have been something else. An eight foot plus roof with the Autosleeper layout[^] Whatever you decide, think carefully before you chop a big hole into the side of your van;) Keep us posted!

Keep the rears, you won't regret it. So much more useful space available, it would be a great experiment to fit the side door but it is always a compromise with the interior lay out. For example if you go for two bench seats to make up a double bed then the only place you can put them is over the rear wheel arches, then there's hardly any space in the bench boxes to store anything, bedding takes up a lot of space and the only practical place to put it is under the bench.

Hi all many thanks for your opinions, it is going to be a family (2 adults and 2 young children)van and used for holidays/short breaks as often as we can.
I was thinking that maybe with the side door it would be more practical for an awning

Yeah scott, Panky did say that you sold duke for that exact reason so you will have seen both sides of the coin and I can see your point.

Also the wife has said after seeing harvey and clarabel in the flesh so to speak she does like the autosleeper layout, so i'll consider myslef overrulled then!! [;0)]

I'd keep the rear doors. Did you see Panky's awning on Harvey at Commerfest? I like the rear fitting awnings, you get all the space and they don't spoil the view of the van for all the VW owners who walk past with envy, wishing their vans were as good looking as a Commer.....
