Starter motor?

Hi all, I’m assuming this is a standard start motor on my commer? I’m thinking of getting a hi torque one as I guess there well worth getting?

I want her to be as reliable as possible so if grabbing the hi torque starter will improve that I’ll get one ordered in.

If the one fitted is working without any problem then I would leave it as it is. That one looks fairly new so must have been replace at sometime.
I fitted a hi torque one to my Auto-Sleeper as the original was knackered and it works very well. Bonnie the Jennings still has the original and after 70,000 miles is still doing the job without any issues.

I’d just clean it up with an oily rag if it’s working ok. I had one fail on my Alpine a few years ago due to a broken main supply cable insulator. I just replaced it with a spare old one and that has been working fine since. I would get a new uk made hi-torque one rather than Chinese made one if it goes.

Check this chat out , just fitted a high torque starter and works a treat

I got her fired up, was the spark plugs, it’s been sat for a long time so I need to do a flush of the coolant and all sorts but she did fire up and started first time, wasn’t sure if it was a bad starter but after finally getting the time to get the plugs out and replace with new ones, she fired up first time! Apparently she’s also got an HIF44 SU carb which was good news for me apparently

Running very rich at the moment but I’d imagine that’s because dodgy fuel and stuff so once she’s had a good clear out, heater matrix fully removed and flushed system I think she might just be ok.

Thanks for the tips.

Had an absolute result with the floor. Whoever had this looked after it it’s just a shame it’s been sat so long.

Would still love to find the old owner but I don’t think I’ll have much luck.

Well done for getting the old girl running, that's a big milestone :) The floor looks mint, they usually go in the rear corners above the spring hangers and blister where the chassis box sections attach. The SU is a real bonus they work much more efficiently and reliably than the old Zenith. If you haven't already check there's oil in the dash pot by unscrewing the black plastic nut on top of the carb, pull the piston out and inside you will see the top of the tube the piston sits in. Top this up to the top of the tube with engine oil (20/50), it will only take a few ml, and push the piston back in and screw it back down. You will feel resistance as its pushed in but this is normal.

Thanks for the tips with the carb oil, will check that out this week for sure, Fuel guage is working so thats a plus, so does the speedo and temp gauge, I will be fully custom wiring it up at some point but for now I want to make sure shes mechanically sound before I start throwing silly money at her but at the moment she seems to be good, I can't fully push the choke in but im guessing this is just a put a peg on it situation for now, I have a specialist fairly near to me in a place called Tring, they work on old MG's Morris minors and things like that so I'm thinking of popping down to see them and getting her a once over just to ensure shes ok. Pretty sure it will be worth changing the gaskets and the radiator as that coolant water wasnt a pretty colour after being sat for so long. Its rained the last few days which has been a god send so I have made a note of any leaks into the rear from the fibreglass roof which I will be getting all fixed up once it drys up and we get some sunny days.

I will keep you guys posted, Shes eventually going to be a very unique Commer! Just unsure what colours to repaint her when I do, still want that two tone but unsure what colour!

My fuel and temp gauges share a voltage regulator, which I seem to recall is 10v, which does fail. I used a 9v battery to check the readings when waiting for a replacement. Ooh exciting picking colours and hopefully ready before the end of the summer :)
