SS Nuts and Bolts - mmmm shiny!

Hi Guys n Gals,

I had to buy a couple of nuts for Frodo's engine today, which got me thinking, wouldn't it be nice to replace all the nuts and bolts with shiny stainless steel versions, and on top of that, use socket head bolts and dome nuts. Now I'm not going to do it right now, but would like to sometime in the future.

Has anyone done this, and if so, do they have the shopping list of parts required?

If not, I'll start putting one together but I thought, if people are interested, it may be worth approaching a supplier, or one of our in house people, to offer an engine dress up kit...

What do you think?

Tim already uses this method has been for ever look so much nicer last longer easier to undo & do up I think thats what he uses the lin bins for,even changes the studs for ss you only have to look at Sybhil Fonty & Duke to see extra shiney bits not too mention the bikes.

Defo something i have been doing ever since Chris and Tim's visit;) every one i put on is one i won't need to replace for a while. And it's the small things that make all the difference sometimes:)

I only use stainless when i can,t get Titanium (or be bothered to make them):I
7/16 1/2 3/8 UNF covers most things. Dome nuts are expensive for what they are. Don,t use s/s bolts for stressed things as they stretch alot.
Always grease the threads too ;)

I reckon its more than that - the photons reflected off the shiny stainless, rather than being absorbed by the dull carbon steel will give you at least 0.00000005 extra horses![}:)]

My policy on my other toy (ummmm VW) has been to replace old nuts with stainless steel as and when I undo them. So much less hassle in the long run and they look v. nice. All pretty easy on the VW as it's all metric which means a quick trip to Screwfix which is very good value for money. Not so easy on the Commer with Imperial fittings which I can't get my head round anyway - do any of you old school fellas know of any useful Dummies guides?? UNC/UNF/Whitworth argggghhhhhhhhh

just had a box of nuts turn up from this guy (see his other items), I bought 7 different sizes of UNF nylocks (totalled about 5kgs worth) for £20 plus a tenner postage. Quite amazing value I though given my local nut and bolt shop charged me 30p or a single 5/8 UNF nut the other day.

Its usually OK to change set screws for stainless ones or chrome ones, but go careful with bolts.
(set screws are threaded all the way, bolts have thread 1/3 or more of the way)
Bolts are often application specific and have higher tensile strength - as Tim says be careful about changing these for stainless.
