Spluttering, gauges and other things...

Hello,

Ok been giving the new commer I picked up last week a good going over, can anyone shed some light on the following..

1, Fuel gauge operates but very vague. Seems to move from 1/4 to 3/4 only. What's by best plan of action.

2, Steering play, lots of it. Looks like it is in the big main pivot in between the hubs... sorry for my technical terms!

3, Knocking - do i live with this to a degree? Has a bit of a lumpy tickover and splutters on over run, points towards timing issue?? I know it's got electronic ignition fitted.

4, Brakes - is the servo kit worth it?

A few little issues to fix
The fuel gauge wander could be caused by a dodgy voltage stabiliser, does the temp gauge do something similar?
Yes there are lots of things to wear on the steering, the are two relay levers - the cranked one is the intermediate relay lever and the one that goes through the cross member under, the engine, is the main relay lever. Both are prone to wear and a new set of bushes and pin are usually required, the bushes press in but need to be reamed out to size.
You could have an air leak on the inlet manifold, that would make it run weak and cause the lumpy idle and possibly pinking.

Actually the temp gauge isn't working at all! But thought that was probably an easier fix in a way as a simple replacement. Where is this Voltage Stabiliser? Does it regulate the whole of the vehicles voltage? The fuel gauge doesn't 'wander' about just seems limited in it's movements.

I think it's the pivot pin/bush on the main relay lever - so i guess I'll hunt one down and see what difference that makes.

Sorry yes pinking, it was the splutter from the over run in combo with the idle which makes me think it's timing. Although sinse a long run idle seems better. Perhaps it was never set bang on since the electric ignition was fitted..

If the voltage reg has gone the gauge will move up and down (slowly) with engine revs, you can get an electronic one off ebay for about a tenner and they are easy to fit. It may be that the tank sender is knackered, copper contacts gummed up on the internals:I

well swapped the temp gauge over and looks like that's working fine now. No movement with revs so looks like i'll have to inspect the fuel gauge / sender further.
