Speedo reading

Hi everyone!

One thing about my van that I need to get to the bottom of is the speedo. It reads about 10mph wrong, on the slow side. The previous owner mentioned it had had a replacement gearbox, no idea where from though so could have been a car. I’ve not checked the tires are the right size yet but thought I would ask your advice, are there different speedo gearing combos out there and an I need to change mine? Thanks as always!

Cheers,

Mo

The speedo reading depends on the speedo gear fitted in the tail housing of the gearbox. I think there are gears with different numbers of teeth, but have no idea which are right for our van's differential, wheel and tyre size combination. The workshop manual doesn't help either. I have a spare gear here, but I don't know if it's the right one.

Bit of a mine field - mines way out so I used a Dyno to stick new ones on :)
You can get speedos re-calibrated for a reasonable price which might be easier

Ah Jim, that reminds me. When I regeared my truck 25 years ago with different axle and larger wheels the speedo was obviously way out, so I calculated, then drew a new circular scale on paper, and stuck it on the front of the glass. It's still there.

I had mine recalibrated at Speedograph Richfield last year.

They did a good job and I got a new cable from them at the same time.

All the best with it. Y

Thanks guys I’ve not got around to sorting this just yet, lots of other jobs have pushed to the front of the queue! Will let you know though.

I have a brand new cable here for a Spacevan that I don't need so can sell it.

Thanks man, I’ve got a new cable as well but suspect it’s not the cable but the gearing it spins at, I will dig at it, tempted to buy a gps speedo and live with that!

No probs. I use a GPS one. Fits in the dash like a 50mm gauge. Has trip and odometer too.

So I’m a twist of fate on this in a parts haul I have 3/4 different speedo cable gears, NOS, of different teeth. One must be the right one.

Just in case you're confused with the previous couple of posts a scammer got through the net and I zapped him

I should probably just report it rather than pass comment. Your welcome to delete the post if it’s going to cause confusion.
