Hi Loz,
I still have fixed strap seatbelts (which catch everybody out 'cos they try and pull them out like normal inertia seatbelts) and have a lap strap for the middle seat. Mine are Australian for some reason, but are legal and fine as long as you adjust them to fit person that is travelling. My other van had inertia seatbelts which used existing holes from originals. You need to make sure that they working properly and adjusted correctly height wise - and fixing points are solid,no tears in cloth and they latch properly. They are covered under MOT which checks for all of this. You could take them in for testing if you have a friendly MOT dude.
Wouldn't trust middle lap strap to little passengers, would have to put in a rally style harness before carrying them there. Hope this helps.

My first van was fitted with inertia reel belts in the front but I am struggling to remember how the reel was fitted to the floor(it was a long tome ago). I did need to change one and I used one from a Mini although there wasn't much slack left when the belt was on.

all I can remember is that I got the 2 front belts from a robin reliant then I made up 2 small brackets for the the bottom mounting.
You will need to get a pair and size up the bottom brackets?
You may need to weld 2 up..I cant remember the year of reliant they were from.

could always look through some classic mags to seek out specialist who fit seatbelts to old vehicles especially if you want to carry baby [8D]
you may find that the specialist will advise that your seatbelt is absolutetly fine
Definitely worth asking good MOT place (one that doesn't sell seatbelts!) if they'll check yours for you - have you got a favourite up in Borth area? - will ask my partner Glyn later as he may know if anywhere in Aberystwyth has a good or bad reputation - he used to deliver up to a few garages so may know. Your local knowledge may well be better though

found that transport office page had details on checking bus seat belts as separate test - don't know whether they would cover what you got or if it would be massively expensive compared to asking MOT garage but contact details of aber depot on the following

so might be worth a phone call to suss out if a useful option.
Alternatively if you have a friendly policeman locally, they might be able to check safety for you.

might be worth checking out a motorsport garage as all the harnesses have to comply with m.s.a safety regulations. we have to fit loads of them in the cars we rollcage, all the mounts are threaded bosses welded to big load spreader plates which are welded in to the car.badly fitting belts can do more harm than good. a bit of common sense and surfing the net for info should give you some idea as to whats available and whats right and wrong, good luck

asked Glyn about garages in aber and he didn't know about reputations but did mention that kwik-fit check seatbelts and SHOULD be unbiased.
Think I remember seeing one in aber.
