Restoration.

Hi again, i am loving all of this talk about commers. I am starting a restoration project today. The big cupboard has gone to be replaced with a smaller one. Are their any tips for restoration? I was thinking about pine throughout what do you think?

We have a couple of chippies on here (plus panky) who may well recommend marine ply owing to it being outside

if your just tackling the inside you should be ok but if your doing the outside set yourself a budget then at least double it.

Hi Andrew. I guess it depends on the finish you want I find pine a bit bland and it would be heavy if you went the tongue and goove route. There are some lovely ply veneers out there if you want a stained look or cheaper pine if you want to paint it. Another way to go is to see if you can find some old oak wardrobe carcasses, they used a plain veneer for the sides and it responds nicely to a rub down and a lick of Danish oil, you'll need to stick it onto a ply base and frame doors for strength as the wardrobe ply is only about 1/8" thick but it does look nice and antique places have been known to chuck em out. I did this to repair a few bits and pieces in my Autosleeper and it is a pretty good match for the original.
