Hi everyone, just a quick question ive just about got everything of the van, and thought about getting it shot blasted to show up the bad areas. But been told that in doing so it could distort the side panel have you got any answers?:D
 
I have heard some bad reports about shot blasting panels - they can distort. There is an alternative which Martin Maltas has used a couple of times - acid dipping. Normally you would cut out and repair the serious rot areas and this process would show up anything else - beware it is very unforgiving and every trace of rust and paint is removed (it's also expensive I believe and it needs to be a totally bare shell) there may be specialist bodywork shot blasters around - check the ads in Practical Classics and the like.

The driver & passenger floor pan is quite bad, guttering, front valance, side window cut out & internal radiator isn't to bad. but if i can have specified areas only blasted and leave side panel alone.
 
Why not investigate hiring the equipment (no idea if you can) and have a go. An old boss of mine blasted a tractor in a gazebo he'd set up in his garden - made a great job of the tractor but made a bit of a mess of the patio :I The van doesn't sound too bad so I'd be inclined to strip the paint back to good metal with a flapper disc an cut out as far back as you need to. New floor pans, valance and gutter panels are available from woolfy at Coventry Commer Panels - if you want to do a proper job. Martin Maltas is also producing fibre glass lower front panels incorporating the valance if you want to cut down on the welding.

I was going to phone Martin " woolfy" Woolf to see if i coud pop round and see him for some advise as i'am not too far from him. I have heard about hiring shot blasters, is it sand or the plastic beads that do the best job?
 
there is various types of medium for blasting, shot,grit,sand,glass beads and crushed nutshells do a good job on panels without the distortion risk. best to do some research ;)

Someone usually comes up with a late meet - we just never know, that's the way we are. Put the pressure on and someone will suggest something :p

Soda blasting is alot more gentle, but still expensive. I have one at the dippers now, we'll see what's left when it comes back [}:)]

Hi Rodders, Sand blasting is a good way to go but it is ALOT of effort. I did all the underbody and engine compaetment on my Highwayman and it took me and a mate three and a half days to do. I purchased the gear to do it as i plan on using it for some other projects but i guess it could be hired. Use a pressurised blaster, the suction kind are $h1T for any large areas. I found the best media to be medium or fine garnet which comes in 20KG bags.
You will get thru the media quite quick so some way of recycling it is a must. In my case i lined the whole garage with plastic so i could just sweep it up and pour via a seive back into the blaster. It can be reused approx four or five times before the media gets to full of gunge. Be aware this is a VERY dirty job! A brilliant mask and full body protection is a must. The benifet is its cheaper than dipping and gives a great finish but you must get primer on double quick or the steel will flash rust and ruin the job.
