Prop oil leak...

Hi all. Picked up an old spare wheel harness from Mr Maltas, refurbed it and the catch and have fitted it a week ago with a spare.

Under the van yesterday and noticed the spare splattered in oil as well as the underside of the van (quite foamy oil). The prop seems to be stuck out quite a bit from teh O/D end (about 50mm). Is a leak normal to this extent as it's not dripping loads when parked up although some. Should the prop be tighter into the box or is the seal just worn a bit? Is the seal a fairly simple fix if you think this is it?

Thanks

Jim

It's the oil seal, cheap and easy to do:)
It does sound like the prop was cut a bit short though, good thing there's plenty on the sliding end:)

You can do it without draining the box, if your quick only a few drops will be lost. If it's a 'J' type OD the old seal will just prise out with a screwdriver once the prop is off - if it's a 'D' then you will need to take out a circlip first. Then tap the new seal in and use a piece of tube or a socket slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal to tap it all the way home. Just make sure you put it in the right way round;)
