Pop top PB wanted

Hi all, we've been lurking for a while but have finally mustered up the courage to join and post. We're in the market for a Camper, after much persuasion on my part we've agreed that a commer is the way to go. Our only stipulation is that it needs to have a pop top rather than a hightop as we want to be able to garage it to protect it and be rust free (I can hear you all laughing from here). We're cool with doing bits of mechanicals (I'd rather not do a whole engine rebuild though) but don't want to do any welding as we don't have the space. Happy to take on a project that someone's finished doing the body work on and then doing work on the interior ourselves. Having said that we definitely wouldn't rule out a finished van if we can find one. I've been looking for a while but am yet to see anything appropriate. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there and welcome to the Madhouse:D
A Commer is a very good choice for space, comfort affordability and upgradeability (is that and actual word:confused:) Only problem is they are comparatively rare to the inferior VW - but a hell of a lot cheaper even though prices seem to be rising rapidly:) Once you get one you will soon appreciate just what fine machines they are but be prepared to get your hands dirty as, with any old vehicle, they need regular maintenance and upkeep, but there's always help available on here. Where about are you? someone may know of one near you, it's worth a shot. Good luck.

Hi Panky, thanks, we're on the Hampshire/Berkshire border. Very happy to get our hands dirty, we're both engineers,(well, I'm an Electrical Engineer and my hubby is Mechanical) so hopefully should be able to work on most things between us.

Welcome. I too looked for a pop top because of height restrictions. Note that there is still a decent difference between a Maidstone (flattest) and later things like AutoSleepers...

A number of people simply stick with a van....

I'm in Leighton Buzzard. A bit of a trek but you'd be welcome if you wanted to have a look. Also I think a number will be at Pistons and Props show in Sywell Northants at the end of September...

Thanks for the tips, TBH i'm struggling to find anything at all at the moment. We're looking into renting a garage from a friend to store it, plans to move to a house with a garage in the future but for now it will do.

Nice to know there are a few down here - I was beginning to think that everyone was up in the North (although we have family all over the place so tend to travel around a fair bit and would be happy to travel for the right van).

Beware that most Commers with pop top wouldn't fit under a "normal" up and over garage door - worth taking the tapemeasure to your friend's and have someone on here take a measurement

I agree with Admin's comment. My maidstone only just creeps under a carport and that is about 2.17m high (by recollection) so I know it wouldn't fit under a normal garage. I had to install a roller door to avoid an up and over hitting the van.
