please help me b4 i go mad

hi all im having a few probs.

ive recently had a rc40 exhaust and k&n air filter fitted to kermit but since its been done ive lost alot of power and my temp seems alot higher than b4

when i first go out all seems fine but after only a short time the exhaust gets louder the engine gets hotter and i lose what i can only say is compression. it wont hold idle when i stop at lights even when ive turned it to about 3000rpm and if i tackle a hill witch b4 i would fly up it struggles like made and pops farts and bangs until i drop it down a gear and then screems for me to change gear again

its very frustrating as ive seen nothing but good results on here from people that have done the same done by the same person so i know it is nothing to do with how its been fitted

pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls help or im reaching for the sledge hammer

ps ive tried the mixture in verious positions and still no better

It shows the symptoms of running very lean so it could be a blocked jet. Try removing the inlet bend on the top of the carb and start the engine, rev it and put the palm of your hand over the inlet then pull your hand away again, do this several times and hopefully the blockage will be shifted. You'll be surprised at the amount of suction generated. Also try taking the slow running jet out and blow it through.

Normally when fitting free flowing exhausts and performance air filters to a std engine the air/fuel mixture has to be adjusted (richening up) or the engine will run lean, hot and lack in power. Hope this helps. There is a good thing on the market called a gunsons colour tune, ideal for setting up old style engines with a carb. It screws into your spark plug hole and has a sight glass in it so you can see what is happening inside your combustion chamber. you need a pale blue burn to run correctly through the rev range. Also check your ingnition timing and points gap while you are there. Timing should be between 6 and 10 degrees btdc (second pointer to the right of tdc), point gap 0.0015in (0.38mm), also check valve clearances, inlet 0.012in (0.30mm), exhaust 0.014in (0.36mm) these should be done when engine is hot. Hope this all helps and your van is soon purring again.

As Panky says it could be as simple as a blocked jet? I'm assuming you have in-line filters both before the fuel pump and between the pump and carb?
rather than removing the jets completely I found it quicker and easier to blow them through with a needle type football inflater on a bicycle pump...hope that helps a little...:D
