Painting wheels and tyre sizes

Hi everyone,

Been a while since I have been on here. Used to post as Bazil but I seem unable to access this account now..

Anyway, I have horrible scummy looking wheels and I want to strip them and give them some TLC.
Tyres will be removed and then I thought about removing everything off them with a wire wheel.

What do you guys recommend I treat and paint the wheel with after? A step by step guide of coats would be appreciated!!!

Also, I am looking at some 195/50 R15 tyres to fit to the van, slightly lower profile but not excessive to alter the speedo by too much. Does this sound an ok size? I am sure I read that Panky has 195;s on his van?

185's on Harvey. The best way is to get your wheels shot blasted and powder coated but I guess that's not cheap:( I used a knotted wire wheel then treated them with Aquasteel, then a couple of coats of primer then top coat. Ordinary celly is fine in the colour of your choice:cool:

Hi Panky, it's been a while....

Thanks for the info, I was thinking wire wheel, aquasteel, etch primer and then several top coats.

Are standard commer rims too narrow for 195's? I don't want them to look anything but the right fit.

Also, possibly a stupid question, can I remove the valves from the rims to clean that area and then have new ones fitted?

Need to assume I have no mechanical / automotive experience now.

can fit 195's on standard... Valve are fitted from the rear so would have to have the tyre removed anyhow I'm afraid... Good masking is the key :)
 
Bonnie has big chunky 195's fitted and they look OK, although it's a bit of a squeeze getting the rear wheels off. I think Harvey's 185's suit the van better and when it's time to change that's what will go on Bonnie. Remember you should be fitting commercial tyres too, although many dont.
Just cut the bit on the valve inside the rim off and get new ones fitted with the tyres, they normally do anyway.
 
Tyres are perished and cracked so will be sacrificed and a full front and back repaint done if the wheels
