Paint for rusty Commers

I have cleaned down some of the underside of my commer so all the loose rust is gone, leaving a clean surface for paint. I want to add a layer of paint that will prevent the rust from forming anymore, what products do you recomend?

I have tons of red oxide, but i presume thats more for new steel rather than the rusty stuff?

Hi paul use a rust converter on the whole underside and then a couple coats of good primer. Then at least a couple coats rust inhibiting topcoat. I also used underseal in just the wheel arches but a lot of folks dont like it. Not much point in giving brand names as they are all different over here. Have fun! I sand blasted and sprayed underneath but in hindsight hand painting would have been easier.i would also recomend waxoiling all the box sections where you can to preserve them a bit more.

Greg i believe you are right, lead paints haven't been around for years! I remember when i was younger i had to strip a door from our house and didn't realise that it had lead paint on it

Iceman, yeah thats what i intend to do, apart from the sandblasting as i dont have good enough equipment. Why did you put rust inhibitor on top of the other primers? surely it wouldnt be effective as it wont be touching metal? I will be using seam sealer where necessary and then use an antichip paint after all those layers, this seems to have been a very effective way so far for other cars i have worked on. I intend on waxoiling, i hope to make some access points so that it can be done on a yearly basis easily :)

As I understand it, many primers are porus to some degree so need a non-porus topcoat for moisture sealing purposes:)
