Overdrive

Hi,

I purchased a laycock type D overdrive that I thought could be fit to my highwayman, mechanic tells me I have the wrong one, shame as was new old stock

Now looking for either correct overdrive unit or a complete gearbox with overdrive?

Any help or advice before I get the old gearbox put back in appreciated.

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian,
If it's just the OD unit you've got then you would need the matching output shaft on the gear box, which would be difficult to find, and a gearbox to OD adapter. It's not necessarily the wrong one (I have a D type on one of my vans) it's just finding the bits to make it fit. Laycock overdrives were fitted to many makes of vehicle it's the bits in between that are different.
You could either search for the correct output shaft and gear box to OD adapter, see if you can get hold of a scrap one to salvage the parts needed or sell what you have and see what else is out there - I think you would get a good price for a NOS unit because, as I said, they were fitted to many cars.

Sounds like the advice I received, to try and find a gearbox with overdrive unit on and then work around that. Its a working van so need it back asap though so may be stuck with 4gears and that scream for a while! I know of a alpine series 5 gearbox and overdrive for sale but think I may still need to locate a prop.

Thanks for the assistance

Ian

As long as it's the upright engine and not the slanted over one (Arrows series) it will bolt straight on. You can get your original prop shortened to save you searching around.

Thanks, I'm think I g I may just have to put my gearbox back in if ai can't get the parts for my overdrive as the gearboxes I found have all been standing for donkeys years.

Would this be the correct output shaft? Mine is a 72 Commer?

Or there's this

My problem is knowing the right parts, i keep buying things that don't fit!

Cheers

Hi Ian. Yest that first on will fit the D type box but it's not that bit you need to join the standard gearbox and OD unit together. The Ebay shaft is the output shaft of the actual overdrive unit. What I meant in my previous post was you would need to get the special gearbox main shaft that fits into the overdrive to match them up.
The second Ebay item is a standard gearbox input shaft and not, as the seller suggests, unique to overdrive boxes.
I think it would be easier for you to re-fit your gearbox until you source a complete gearbox/OD unit to save you faffing about, but do let us know what you find so we can advise on anything before you spend out again.

Think i’ll just stick the old one back in, i read about people putting alternatives like a Lexus 5 speed on, anyone know which gearbox and if worthwhile how easy it is to do? Thanks in advance
