Noisy exhausts.

Most of the noise in my van seems to come fron the tail pipe, the motor itself is fairly quiet, it's especially bothersome in the summer when the windows are down, I did come up with the idea of routing the pipe out to the rear of the van, getting past the axle seems a bit of a problem though.

Anyone tried this?

That's unusual as the standard exhaust is so restrictive. Does the tailpipe actually stick out past the lower skirt panel - you may be hearing noise reflected back if it doesn't - or the silencer could be knackered. Either way best to replace it with a bigger bore , non restrictive system (RC40) - more power no more noise than usual:)

you could run it over the axle if you weld 4 bends together and lengthen the pipe, but the best option is a RC40 as panky says :)

I don't know whether this could be any use, but it gets your pipe over the rear axle.

Thanks again guys, quite a bit to mull over now! Looking at that Feugo tailpipe looks intersting and has given me an Idea.

time permitting I'll experiment over the weekend, I'll get my tube bender out of the shed and er... have a bending session to see if I can sort something out.

you might as well get that fuego exhaust - there aren't any fuegos left for it to go on!


I used to love Renult Fuegos with their wonderful curved rear screens - they were ace!

Not believing our luck driving away from the garage with a year's new ticket with some just advisories on brakes and suspension :D this was tempered somewhat but an almighty misfire which then blew a hole in our (rather rusty) exhaust ! But then I thought that this was even better luck, as I now have no excuse not to fit something better [8D][8D]

From various posts I'm thinking about the stainless twin box side exit RC40 and then a K&N too [8D]. I'm also considering a custom build but likely to be twice the price - however as I'm intending to replace our water tank with an LPG tank so would like to ensure the exhaust is as far away from this as possible !

My understanding of the RC40 is that it improves acceleration (when combined with K&N) but noise similar to standard system, due to the different sizes it tequires sleeving to fit the standard Commer downpipe.

However, one thing I'm not clear about is whether the RC40 exhuast fitting requires it to be modified by cutting and welding to get a suitable routing under the Commer. Also does it require additional hanging points etc ? Please could somebody confirm what's required for the RC40 twin box fitting ?

A question specifically for Tim, are your proposed new front pipes available and are the compatible with the RC40 ?

But concerned about Jules' comments about noise levels of the RC40, looks like he's done his own thing but if I recall this was also too noisy and he's since added a parallel system with a diverter. What are other's experiences of RC40 noise levels ?

But interestingly suggestion that Martin now has his own solution off the shelf ...

I had a trip in bigmonkeyman's Jessica and can assure you that noise levels inside are no higher than with a standard exhaust. I'm about to construct a system using off the shelf sections from a local supplier, I'll get part numbers and prices and publish on here. It will consist of silencers similar to those used on an RC40 but I'll be fabricating the rest from bends and straight sections - the only difference will be the downpipe as I'm using the Rapier manifold with twin downpipes. Watch this space - well Back of the Garage space.

i can make a downpipe the right size to fit a rc40, although it would be better if you send me the manifold so i can change it to a proper flange like the one i did for martin.
to fit the rc40 on a std downpipe requires a step up sleeve welded on, then the middle box fits, then a bit cut out to shorten the distance between the two boxes and suitable hangars/mounts added. i think thats about it. if you have access to a welder its a couple of hours work, or if you want to bring it over i can do it for you :)
noise wise they are very effective at silencing and have a nice deep burble.
the engine will breath 100x better and the torque will improve as well as the economy, and the running temp will drop, so its a win/win situation [^]
