Went out for a drive yesterday and everything seemed OK, odd cough and spluter but then it just died. I've had a quick look this moring and there's no spark, have a spark in the distributor but not at the plug. Anyone got any ideas?
Hi [8D]
if you have a good spark at the kinglead(large lead that pushes into the distributor) then its a possibility that there is a fault with the rotor arm, good chance its shorting out on the centre shaft. when you take the arm off and look inside the hole that pushes onto the centre shatf then you may find a burnt/blue mark inside.
The other alternative could be a weak spark thats strong enough to get to the cap but a yellow/white colour spark would tel you that.
If thats the case possible coil/ kinglead/ condenser/point problem.
hope u sort it
lets us all when you find the prob so we all can look out for the fault
Thanks everyone, the weather was too nice to spend the day with my head in the engin compartment yesterday but should get chance to have another look today. I'll let you know how I get on.
wait till its dark then lift the lid and turn it over, you will easily see if the spark is arcing anywhere but DONT put you finger over the plug cap because you will get a nasty little shock
i had a similar problem with my BSA some years ago, it would start and run fine but as soon as i stopped it, it would not start at all. after weeks of hassle and replacing things i discovered the brand new H.T cap had a hairline crack which needed a magnifying glass to see it [!][V][B)]
"you were only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"
Yehay - got it! Replaced the dizzy cap, coil, condenser and points but still nothing. [xx(] Checked the rotor arm (again) and found the connection inside had sheared off. New rotor arm and fired up first time. Thanks everyone.
Got one of simonbbc's electronic ignition kits to play with as well, will let you know how I get on.
