New Starter motor

Thanks for reply , I did blow through the supply pipe and heard bubbles from the tank . No filter . I did try hand over carb . Will have another go today . Would like to try another pump so it will either work or eliminate the pump . The joy of old vehicles , never a dull moment :) Thanks , Ken

The aa man took the fuel line off the carb when I couldn’t start mine to see if fuel was flowing. Dried out diaphragm so replaced the pump. Can’t find receipt so can’t say where I got it from.

The pump is common to most other Rootes group vehicle with the same engine type of the time - Hillman Minx, Humber Sceptre, Sunbeam Rapier etc. A quick Google came up with this

There are a couple on Ebay - one for £100

and this one for rebuild

Thanks , I did and it did fire for a second or two but it's the delivery that's the problem . I've found this on line , do you recon might be the right replacement ? Very tempted to try . Although mine has a glass bowl . Model UG . Funnily enough , I found that too ! Many thanks !

According to the listing it's the right one so should sort your issue out. You could try a temporary gravity fed supply just to prove the engine runs with a supply direct to the carb inlet.

Hello Panky , I did think of that , I have an old grass cutter petrol tank I have used previously so might try that , at least it'll give me some music for a short while !

Oh well , have ordered that pump . fingers crossed all will be well and I will now have a quick starting reliable Commer . Thanks for all your help , advice and assistance . Let you know what happens next , Ken

Yes , was going to try that BUT have taken the pump out and ordered a new replacement pump . So would mean attaching the old pump just to try !! but have other things to do so will wait for the new pump , thanks , Ken

Sods law !! Murphy's Law !! whatever !! Fitted a new High torque starter ! Fuel pump not feeding fuel so 1/ took to bits , decided the diaphragm was OK but maybe new one will help ! Found the suction valve was loose so peened the body to tighten that . Tried with new diaphragm , no go ?? ordered a new pump Wednesday . they told me delivery would be Friday so fiddled / fettled the old pump with the old diaphragm and fitted Thursday afternoon . Wouldn't start ! Damn ! oh well new pump coming tomorrow !! New pump arrived . Thought I'd try the old one , one last time !! Took plugs out of engine and spun on starter , it fair zoomed around and with the pipe to carb off , petrol shot out !! OOH !! so put pipe in and pressed starter and wow Vroomed into life as if the old pump being threatened with being replaced thought ! ''I better get my finger out'' !!
1/2 hour later , started immediately :) :) So maybe all my problems in starting , gradually getting worse was just the suction valve was loosening ?
At least I have a spare pump and spare diaphragm ! IN the van ! Thanks for all your help and advice , Ken n Trisha

Bloody typical :) I've done the same thing on numerous occasions and have several spares for various cars that are still waiting to be fitted:rolleyes:

Seems to be starting OK ish spitting through carb badly on start up and low revs pulling away , need to take carb off and check the sonic clean did clean out everywhere !! been out last week or so 13miles , 28 miles and 83miles , have to keep near petrol stations as very juicy ! Webber carb ! and the petrol guage stays on full for ages and then goes down to about half way and tank is dry ish ! but getting to sender unit is awkward as do not have hoist / lift etc so will have to put up with that ! I do carry a spare gallon though ! Drives nice , handles and brakes quite well . Am toying with idea of fitting an SU as have read they are easy to adjust and more economical than standard Zenith or Webbers ? so where can I find an inlet manifold for an SU and what model ? I had an SU on an old Harley many years ago and it was very much more economical than the standard Linkert carb by a good 50% .

HI Ken, I have the manifolds going spare for an SU conversion on an iron head 1725! Don't know if you are anywhere near, but I am in Colchester, Essex. PM me if you are interested.
Sadly I don't have a spare SU HIF 44 to go with it.
Cheers Trev.

Hello Trev , that's quite a trek for me all the way to darkest Essex !! Not sure how to pm but interested in the manifold thanks ! Don't suppose you will be at the Braintree and Bocking Public Gardens Classic Car and Bike show - Septermber the 7th ? Otherwise I can pop up sometime (all the way from Upminster) . Many thanks , Ken . You can pm me if you know how ?
