New fridge

Hi Everyone.

this weekend I was lucky enough to buy a new/old fridge from RICH-LOU (Kermit is so famous - I have the fridge which was removed to fit the bass box:D)

Anyway its a gas/12v one which fits where a fridge should go on an Autosleeper but I'd quite like it to be 240v too. When I mentioned this to Bernie he said "get a transformer" now why didn't I think of that?!

So I've been thinking about it and little recessed spot lights you get in modern kitchens run on 12v and have a little transformer - does anyone know any reasons why using one would be a really bad idea?! Also what kind of power would it draw?

You need a very big transformer and the one that comes with the little lights will burn out. You will never get the best out the fridge on 12v as it only just about keeps it cool. If you have an ammeter fitted to your van and switch the fridge on and off you will see what i mean about how many amps it uses!!:D

Mine is wired in the van with 30amp cable so they must take a fair bit of amps.There only meant to be used on 12v while your driving.

Some fridges you can replace the element in the back for a two way wired one with two circuits inside it 12v/240v which is mounted in the righthand corner looking at the back of it.
 
Ive checked it out and on 12v its rated at 75 watts;)
Some low voltage downlight transformers are 100watt so should be ok just check what yours is.;)

Chill on this one for a sec!

12v is DC
240v is AC

You would need to turn 12v dc to 240v Ac, so an inverter or mains hook-up would be needed. I'm not sure of the effectivness of long term use of inverters, however i'm assuming there not to efficient as you need to generate the AC as well as step up the voltage.

I think from my rusty dusty days P(Watts)=I(Amps)*Volts so if you * the volts by 20 you reduce the current by 20 to keep a balance, i.e. your fridge keeps using the same power. But it wont as Gas, 12v and 240v cooling systems may be more or less effective.

I use a black bin liner under the van and get cool beers / food on a hot day (Natures fridge)
