Hi, my wife wants to get an Morris minor traveller. I just wondered if they they will be similar to work on as my commer? What sort of price range should they be for a good one?

Morris Minors are brilliant,we have a family fleet and use them every day. They are even simpler than a Commer with great parts availability. The wood on the Travellers is very prone to rot and needs careful checking and there are lots of bodged ones around. Late post 1962 ones ate best as they can just about keep up with todays traffic if driven hard!

I am not a person, I am a number, 395 actually......Be seeing you!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Common modification/upgrade to a lot of Morris Minors still running in Australia is to fit the A series Datsun motor, in 1200, 1400 or 1500cc capacities, plus fitting the 5 speed gearbox,(though quite rare here). Motors are 8 port alloy head, indestructible bottom end, cheap for parts and produce much better power and super reliable. I had a 1400 version in my Datsun Sunny wagon that had around 250,000 km on it and still ran like a Swiss watch. The motor is very similar to the Morris as Datsun had a licence to build the Morris A series motors in the late 50's-early 60's. Unlike the British Motor industry Datsun made improvements and developed the motor over the years. Another good point is all the Datsun A series motors were originally built for unleaded petrol, as 80% went to the US market. If you found a Morris with a dead motor I'd definitely recommend this way if your aren't too worried about originality.

Cheers Stephen

I don't think Mr P got one called Tim[:0]quote:

Sounds good, I've heard good reports about the Morris minor traveller. I think I might be ready to trade in my everyday car for a mortise minor. I will set myself a budget and see what I can find.

My advise is to be very very careful. There are plenty of Traveller out there - some fantastic, some good and some awful, unfortunately there are some sellers who think their rot box cars with filler laden wood are worth a fortune. They are lovely cars and if you get a good one you wont be disappointed but be prepared for what comes with it - absolutely no mod cons (unless someone has fitted a temperature gauge;)) unassisted drum brakes that need a good shove to stop you, skinny tyres that occasionally imagine they have grip in the wet - a bit like a Commer really;) They need care and attention, just like your van, so make sure you have the time and patience to look after two demanding vehicles before you decide.
I know you're set on a Traveller but why not consider a saloon first - much cheaper and a lot more of them about, that way you can decide if you can live with one before you splash out a lot more cash for a Traveller.
Mine's called Ted by the way:)

Saw a nice saloon at our local Steam Rally, complete with cute matching camping trailer:)

The simpler the better

Good points panky, the more I think it's probably a dream at the moment. Don't get me wrong I love every minute on my commer( even that front gear linkage) but another similar project might be to much for me at the moment. It's going to be something for the future but it's just one classic for now.

That's a lovely morris traveller, how long did it take you to restore it?
