Hello all,
In the end we didn't sell our van straight away we have now put MOT and TAX on instead. Thought it might still be of interest to you.
We love this van and want it to go to a good home where she will live on. We bought it 2 and half years ago from a couple who had for their wedding vehicle and sold it due to a baby on its way. We drove it to spain which was amazingly good fun.
We are selling as now we have a baby on the way!. Would be fantastic to do her up ourselves but as we do not have the time we want to find a good home for it at a fair price. This van has been dearly loved.
Basically the Van is great and can be driven around all day but needs body sorting - Depends on how mint you want it and if you can do stuff yourself. Because the interior is good and mechanically is strong with the body sorted would be great van to have especially according to this years prices (which are going up every year, partly because of panels now being manufactured, Vee-dubs being expensive and because they are great vans)
Heres' the lowdown -
The Van has just passed it's MOT (Only needing a headlight bulb) and has 6 months of TAX.
Safari Beige - really nice colour
Chassis has been sandblasted and protected about 8 years ago.
Had a complete restoration about 10 years ago (Chassis, joint's, gearbox, engine, brakes, interior, body- has done about 15,000 miles since)
Engine runs very well and smooth- has been compression tested (All cylinders are well and have even compression) Spins nicely
Engine has done 200 miles since last service and re-time
Tyres still have lots of tread
Interior is in very good condition - all trims and linings pretty much mint
Brand new clutch
Gearbox is smooth
It has an overdrive gear which is great and rare - not available on some commers (Quieter, smoother and better fuel economy) Basically a fifth gear
Suspension is good
Good brakes
New front knuckle joint
New coil and ignition.
Cast iron head (as opposed to aluminum which warp whenever overheats)
What needs done -
Although the body is sound in it's large areas, the extremities of the body work are going (started about 1 and half years ago).
The Body main panels look good and are very solid but the edges look tatty including the doors. (Now is the time to sort it before it goes any further 95% of the rust is surface).
I have figured out how much work I think it needs to get it sorted. Excluding the the doors (which need a fabricator). I have had a quote for all in £800 by a pro. Parts of this could be done by yourself. If you prepare yourself the paint job will probably be £300 depending as main panels do not need touching really.
90% of the rust can be taken back to metal with a good metal power brush - which can be done by a car enthusiast or good DIY'er with a Hayes bodywork manual.
85% of this can filled and sanded back ready for spraying by a DIY person. Inner skins are sound which is a big plus - check the commer forums. Seam on the van are very good - which again is rare. Most of the rust is still only cosmetic.
Here's the breakdown of exactly what needs doing-
Spots between 1cm and 2 cm of surface rust on the face, sills and roof gutter. (probably 15 in total which need sand, light fill, and sand). The main body panels are sound.
N/s Rear quarter needs a 12cm by 6 cm sand back to metal, a patch, light fill and sand.) These spots are where it always goes.
O/s sill needs a small piece of fabrication, sand back to bare metal over approx. 12cm distance. Probably needs a inner sill fabrication - not too bad as is not visible.
Front face has rust hole approx 1 inch wide.
Front face seam need sanding and filling in places.
Front valence needs sanding back. Might be worth getting a front valence from coventry panels.
Front doors in good condition apart from the bottom edges which are rotten through. 2 inches of inner and outer skin (Always goes here)
Rear doors in very good condition apart from the bottom edge which rotten through 2 inches of inner and outer skin (Always goes here)
Even as a weekend project the bodywork could be sorted well before for next spring.
I guess the type of person that buys this van will enjoy the process of of looking after and cherishing it. You will either need quite a few weekends free to spend on it or has the money to pay a pro..
Van has been very much cared for apart from rust work
We were thinking a fair price by todays standards is around £1500 or ono.
I have lots of photos that we have put onto a pdf so if you are interested please email me or ring me and I will send them to you. Also we are around this weekend if anyone wanted to come and have a look at her.
