Lots of black smoke? PLEASE HELP.

Hi all,
Just gone out to start the van as we are going on holiday for a week and on our return we are going to V-festival the day after so thought i'd give it a run out to keep things sweet whilst we are away.
Gave it some choke, but no more than normal. Then gave it a good rev once it was ticking over, but that's just it.....It never really ticked over too well so i gave it some more and it just sounds like it's misfiring and there is a lot of black smoke coming from the exhaust??? It never did this before but in fairness i haven't started it for around a week. Is this just unburnt fuel or something more sinister? It used to tick over beautifully once warm but now it just cuts out if i take my foot off the pedal.

Any advice warmly welcomed please:)

Just tried it again and it seems to be ok this time??? Would the above problem be just that it's been stood for a while?

May have been a slug of crap from the tank or a blocked jet. Check the air filter for nesting robins :)

black smoke is unburned fuel, so it probably just flooded a bit [xx(]

My yellow pickup did this the other week. It hadn't been started for a while (6 months). Didn't worry about it, just put it back to bed ;)
 
could be just a little oil leaking into the combustion chambers while it has been standing, past the valve guides maybe?

once its all gone you should be fine, could be worth doing a compression test just to make sure though.

Thanks ever so much for the replies chaps. I think it was just a bit of gunk in the system? All seems ok this morning;-) Worried me a bit though it has to be said.
