Hey guys, its been a while since I posted, I have started restoring my 63 commer and want to know if anyone on here knows a quick and efficient way to remove the side fluted panles as I have a pair on order from WOOLFY (cant wait to get them) and want to remove my old ones so that when I recieve them, I can get on with the weliding.

As for the fluted side panals, just chop em out with thin cutting disk - BUT - make sure the seam between the bottom of the side panal and the top edge of the inner cill is not cut as if they seperate the side will 'spring' in or out and you will never get it straight again!!! Might be worth tack welding something in to keep it all in the right place if the seam is ropey.

as ice man says theres no quick way to do this job as in the long run you end up making yourself more work. i found a 3.1/2 inch air grinder to work the best as it creates less heat and you have alot more control over it than a standard electric angle grinder. but to get a good standard of finish you have to take your time what ever you use.
 
yes to remove them, i agree, the best way is to grind them off, but once grinded off, should I grind each tack weld off the old ones or is there a different way everyone does it, for instance, weld the new panels directly to the top section to leave the body untouched.

What I mean by leave the body untouched is do no remove the cills from the original spot?

Ive heard that it will be next to impossible to get straight again
 
I think i know what you mean? I'd grind the old tack welds off and tack weld it in place. If the cill fits pretty good, put a bead of Tigerseal in the groove to smoothe out the lines;)

The best way, is to drill out all the spot welds on the inside, which joint the side panel, cill and floor together. Then slip the new cill in and plug weld it back together. Simple [?] No [V]
The main problem with this, is the area by the wheel arch, it's vertually impossible to get to, with the arch in place.
If the bottom of the side panel has rotted, you can cut the bottom off and fabricate new one. This gives you full access, to the area behind the arch, which is usually rotten.
If all this is too much, go for Scotts suggestion and trim off the old cill, taking care not to cut thru' the side panel ;)

I kind of had a feeling that I would probably be doing this the hard way but proper way which is the BEST WAY explained by Martin Maltas and that is to drill through all the welds, Thanks guys for the support, once I have the van inside and recieve the panels from WOOLFY, Ill post some pics, HOPEFULLY SOON. Thanks
