Not a vapour trail to be seen, no U.S. tankers coming in and out of Mildenhall. Went outside to see if I could smell any volcanic ash, but all I could smell was the brewery. Wind must be from the north east!
Apparently, these precautionary measures were introduced after 1982 when a BA 747 flew into a volcanic dust cloud in Indonesia and lost all four engines. They managed to restart them at about 12,000 feet, but the engines were severely damaged.
Apparently, the silica in the dust melts at about 12,000 degrees which means the engines will clog up with molten glass causing them to fail. As the plane descends rapidly the engines will cool allowing the molten glass to solidify making the ensuing crash a near certainty - that BA flight was very lucky indeedy.
