Isuzu Engine conversion

It has been quite some time since i ventured on here! So excuse me if i have missed this happening already...

I have been thinking again about a diesel engine conversion for my Commer, i am fairly sure i want to go the route of a 1.7td isuzu engine mated up to a manta/carlton gearbox (5 speed)

I had been tempted with going automatic, because its not like its ever going to be quick and it would be quite nice to have a lazy machine, but i guess that if i fitted an auto box, it wouldn't be quite as simple as just getting the box and ecu, then hooking it all up? Or am i mistaken?

Any other suggestions of relatively cheap and good diesel engines that are under 2L and can be mated up easily to a RWD box are much appreciated! I seem to remember somebody was shoving a ford 1.8 in thier van?

Paul its not easy thats all i can say you need 3 types of the 1.8tdi to change bits round to get it to fit the commer engine bay
(escort tdi,mondeo tdi,and p100 pick up)you also need to fit different fly wheels and starters for wich ever gearbox you use. I havent been on the said project for a while as have been doing a full body resto on my camper. Hope to be back on it when the weather turns and im not using my camper.Im carring all the work out on a chopped down chassie of a rotten van to make it alot easier to work on. The 1.7isuzu lump may fit better, get hold of one and try it in the engine bay.I just took a gamble and brought a tdi ford one to try then ended up with another 2 lol!

Cheers for the reply chaps and apologies for the lack of a reply for so long! I am trying to find a donor car with the 1.7 lump, but nothing reasonable seems to be popping up. Not like i am in a major rush anyway seeing as the body is pretty awful and needs attention more so!

I'm sure there would be an old Vauxhall Astra or similar which could be used. The Opels have been sold for years with both the GM and the Isuzu 1.7 diesels alongside each other, so that should be the case for Vauxhall too. The Isuzu unit being the one to go for, as you've said already :)
(Can't believe I just said that, as I should be promoting my employer's products, and not slag them off.. ) [:0] ;)
 
Has anyone tried putting in a Perkins prima out of a sherpa, already rwd so could use the sherpa gearbox aswell.
 
You have still got the problem of the gearlever being under the table in the back of the van! lol Perkins engines are not exactly the most performance route to take either;) and very loud compared to your modern diesel lump.Quiter the better when your sitting on top of it;)

Jostein, you would be suprised how hard it is to find one, and if you do, they are making good money (often £500 onwards from what i have seen). Im a cheapskate so i dont want to be paying much more than scrap price if i can help it! I wouldnt mind so much if i was to buy one and use it as a daily driver for a bit, but i already have a decent car that i don't want to sell/have sitting around!
 
I do get you point, Paul. Shame they're so expensive, and difficult to get hold of. On the other hand, they seem to last forever.. :)
 
although sometimes noisy the perkins is a very agricultural - easy to work on lump - lots of torque but fairly slow - I have worked on perkins diesels in the navy, some were noisy, some were not - all depending on condition and care

plus certain commers were designed to take them so they might be the easier to fit option

Old, slow,fuel drinking, noisy, tractor ,type engine. Why go to the trouble of fitting it all in to get no further forward with increased power and economy. As this is the only reason why you would do an engine swap. Modern diesel all the way i say;)
