Hello
I'm in the process of tidying up Jessica's interior, she is an autosleeper, but someone has painted all the woodwork, so I'm scraping it all off!

most of it is coming off well and doesn't look too bad, but some bits look a little tired. Has anyone restored woodwork like this? What kind of varnish/stain should I use?

Who on earth would want to cover up that beautiful wood [:0] 'Modernising' the interior I think it's called. Not sure what was used for the original finish probably just clear varnish but you may get patchy results unless you strip the lot back. I'm going to try experimenting with brush on wax, it comes in loads of shades I'm sure I'll find one close. I'm rubbish at painting and stuff but I've used this on doors and tables with good results.

Good on ya for finding the wood underneath - never got round to it in my first van - had a generous dollop of red fencelife over everything[xx(]

Just revamped a worn wood jukebox cabinet by finding a good match wood dye/stain and rubbing it in with a cloth - only soaks into worn or scratched bits not into good varnish. Came up pretty well - kept the feel of original patina without going ultra new shiny.

Hoping to do the same with Bessies' woodwork but haven't had time to get out and find good match wood dye - once I do I can let you know shade to go for if sounds helpful;)

The "jukebox" technique is what I need really. In most places, the paint came off really easily (as the stain/varnish was in good nick below) on others, like the top of the wardrobe door, the varnish is worn away and the paint has stuck much better

sounds like we need a sticky thread on Autosleeper woodstain colours :)

There seems to be 2 different types of stain/varnish, a light shiny one for the unit carcases and door/draw edges and a darker one for the veneered bits in the middle. I could do with finding out where to get some of the formica from to replace the sink cover.

Took a trundle to our local Focus on Sunday and had a rummage in the wood dye section, was allowed to take a couple of bottles out to van but sadly no testers available so had to match door colour to picture on the tin. Peruvian mahogany was closest picture-wise but proved a tad dark on rubbing in so haven't got a wonderful recommendation for a match- next lightest one would have been a Burmese teak in the range. The lighter pine woodwork comes up pretty well with bees wax and some light brown shoe polish.

Cupboards still look better though, have only done door faces so far - afraid I don't have any before photos as parked down by the river on the way home and did me woodwork there:) apart from scratches being a bit dark am happy with results - but I wanted it to still look like a 30+ year old camper. Might do something with grill door as has some water damage and problem around one hinge. Good luck with Jessica[8D]
