Hi all, new to forum. We just bought a 1981 Dodge Commer camper.

I believe it has the 1725cc Rootes petrol engine.

For reduction in maintainance and better reliability im looking to swap out the mechanical ignition distributor for a solidstate/electronic control module. Any ideas on what I should buy? And any advise in general? At the same time im going to get new spaek plugs and HT leads as these are knackered and corroded. And 'gap' the plugs to right gap depth. In mm does anyone here know the optimum gap size for the plugs, and what plugs to buy? Thanks in advance,

Hi guys and welcome :) Yes that is a Rootes 1725 lump and what a fine looking van, probably ex BT. Any more pics
The plugs you need are Champion N9Y, gapped to .025 inch, they were fitted to many cars and I usually get them from here

Leads for a classic Mini or Morris Minor will fit so they too are easy to get. I've fitted an AccuSpark electronic distributor along with their solid state coil on but my Auto-Sleeper and Morris Minor and both work very well. There are other, more expensive ones out there (Pertronics) but I've found AccuSpark fine for my needs.

You can get the full kit here or give them a call and explain you requirements

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

Welcome ..........that's a super looking van. Plenty of room in there.
In the old days when I ran petrol engines, I always used Lumenition ignition systems. They cope well with distributors with a bit of play in the rotor.

Hi Panky, thanks for the advice, so that kit you linked is a drop in kit? And other than basically gapping the plugs its pretty simple job? Do I need to call them to ask for something specific? Or can I just purchase that kit from the Ebay link?

So that electronic distributor doesn't have mechanical contacts? The inside still rotates, but each output is switched with a mosfet or something? Will post more pics later today

No no points but a trigger replaces it. It is a straight fit but I found the timing needed adjusting quite a lot to suit the new distributor. That one will fit but it's alway best to talk to the suppliers to make sure - I was running my van with one I pinched off my Morris Minor for a while so there's not much difference but as I said check with the suppliers first.

Hi and welcome. Lovely van. I got an accuspark dizzy. I got the whole thing. I didn’t realise that the dizzy slid out of the lower bit so I unbolted the whole housing from the engine and ruined the gasket. I then plugged the wires in the wrong way and blew the bits in the dizzy so had to then order the innards. I rang them up and they were very helpful. The innards weren’t actually on their website and were cheaper. I got my mechanic to fit it properly in the end lol.
