help needed quickly

Please don't all shout at me at once but I,ve just seen a Vdub camper
for sale, and I must admit I was (am) tempted. As I don't know the first thing about them can anyone advise me about what to look for or what to listen for with the engine, which are their weak spots. This is one of the old shape vans and it has a raising roof but I don,t know if Auto sleeper do a VW conversion. As it looks pretty solid I think it will sell fairly soon. Thanks in anticipation for some good helpful answers as well as the others.

Did you mean to post that over there? http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/

What's happened with your Commer?

Engine wise with a VW grab the large pulley at the bottom with the fan belt on it and try to move it back and forward. There should be a little bit of movement but not excessive. This is the end float of the crank. If there is a lot of movement there is excessive wear! Check all of the tinwear is in place and the correct seals are around the engine bay. The thermostat and housing are a real pain and most people remove them which can mean the engine does not warm up correctly.

Body wise they rot pretty much every where, if it has a sliding door check that runs freely, door bottoms, outriggers, jacking points, gutters etc etc.

And remember unless you can do it yourself any repair costs are extortionate because of the perceived value of the vans.

So unless it comes with a cast iron gaurantee or you can do it all yourself I would think long and hard before going down that route.

Ireland here we come.

No I wanted to ask intelligent people first as I know some on here have had Vdubs in the past.

Fair play! I only drove my mates early bay once - it had a nice, rebuilt engine, but the bodywork was thin and you could see where someone had welded in the back of a washing machine!

But what's happened with your COMMER Les?

Thanks for the information about the Vdubs, unfortunately the one that I had seen has disappeared so I suppose it`s been sold, I quite fancy that dodge that`s advertised but it`s a left legger and I don`t think I could get used to that.

That Dodge is lovely. They are weird as prices seem to be all over the place with them.

Hasta la supervista baby
