Hello and my project

Hi,
I have a couple of 1972 PB vans.
One is realy solid underneith and the other is rather draughty inside but it does have a lovely Autosleeper conversion.
I am going to make one good one from the two so there will be loads of spare bits at some point.
I may change the standard engine and gearbox for a 2.3L Volvo 940 engine and 5 speed gearbox. They are very similar in size and layout and will fit prety well.I am not wanting to go for lots of power but just enough to be able to keep up with motorway traffic. I shall change the front suspension and brakes to cope too. Has anyone had any experience of increasing power through the rear axle?

Howdo!
We think the Volvo idea sounds perfect for us so please keep the forum up to date on your progress, we might just have a go ourselves. We used to have a 740 and it had a fantastic engine, went for miles at any speed you let it creep up to.
So best of luck if you go ahead and keep us posted

Hi Rob,Hi Angela & Jez
Im sorry, i dont have any info for you on the engine change Rob,but like Angela i would like to know how you get on. Especially with the steering & suspension. Mine is very heavy at the moment and not very much lock on steering.I think its all original under there, but its in the paintshop as we speak so i cant check it.Good to see a few more people on board.
cheers Gary:)

Hi,
I've not made contact for a few weeks. I am now a Dad....a very tired one at that.
I have looked into putting the Volvo engine and gearbox into my van.
The problem is gearing. The rear axle ratio is too low. I would like the Volvo engine to be doing about 3200rpm at about 65mph. With the current diff the cruising speed would be about 53mph at these revs.
Is there a diff available with a ratio around 3.7 to 4:1?
I can do fine tuning on tyre diameter if there is a ratio suitable.

Rob
