With all the mods I see going on ,6 speed, super charging , v8, I wonder why no one has tried electric power steering ?. If you look at the triumph crowd and the Sunbeam Tiger mob people put the system in their cars with great effect . They use and adapt the system used in late model cars and electronic wizzes even sell the electronics to put it in old cars.If you put big wheels on your Van or as I have done ,extended hubs to widen the track ,they steering does get a little heavy . There is a mob in America that make a new set up for the hot rod crowd I think their name has rivers in it ,I will be in the US in 2 months I will try to see their set up.
Keep those minds ticking over.
 
Are these systems power assistance or full replacement[?] I don't do modern cars :I

I think it's an electric motor that 'drives' the steering column, so no need to replace the actual steering mechanism, just the column?

Its an electric pump that has to be fitted into the steering column, There are kits available for around £400 inc the ecu needed to power it. The kits can be fitted to just about any old vehicle and are fantastic. Highly recommended :D

You can fit the column from a corsa, cost about £50 and the ECU is about £40 on eBay. At least that's what in looking at.
 
It's strange but I find the steering on Bonnie is much lighter than that on Harvey - must be the coach built over hang on the back levering the front wheels up:)

What an awsome mod. This is one thing i would really like on the van as driving in tight areas is a task for hercules. Sounds like it would be quite easy to fit up as well. I will be the guniepig if someone supplies the parts... :)

I just need a good rootes...
 
I'm trying to get my head around how this would fit on. I guess at some point the needs to be a joint between the Corsa column and the Commer one - which would mean fabbing up coupling of some description or am I missing something:I

You might need a controller too...or sensors

Sorry, that's what I meant by ECU, not the correct terms I know. Definitely worth looking at I think. I want my girlfriend to drive the van too, and she's only ever had cars with power steering.
 
The kit I saw in the U S last year was much smaller than the corsa one and would fit between the legs of the driver ,if that where you decided to put it.
