Grab your tape measures

Hi all,

I was hoping some of you good folk could assist me with some measurements to give me some idea where and how high the standard gearbox is located. My van came without an engine and gearbox, so I'm flying blind. I am planning on installing something a little different and need a reference point, to see if the conversion will fit.

What I am after is the measurement from the van floor to the centre of the gearbox output flange. If you could also post any side-on pictures form under your vans, showing the gearbox/motor arrangement, these would also be very useful too.

Thanks, Stephen

Hi all,

I knew I forgot something! Has anyone got information or pictures of Tow Bars fitted to Commer vans. I eventually want to tow a car trailer, so the installation would need to be fairly sturdy. I fear that the goose neck would need to exit where the rear number plate is, to get the height correct. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Stephen

Yori and Smurf have towbars
Can't help with gearbox location; I know woolfy has got gearbox mounts too

from the lowest floor rib to the centre of output shaft is 8"

Thanks for the info so far. I will head outside later to check. Too bloody hot at the moment, currently 38 degrees C (100 F)without a cloud in the sky, and would fry my butt on the concrete!

Cheers Stephen

Here's a pic of Harvey's OD gearbox in position held in temporary while I made up a new cross member

Thanks. Great shot, it's becoming much clear now. Certainly a solid looking gearbox. Was the Overdrive, i assume it's a J type, an original option on the vans, or something that "just happened to fit" with a few mods?

Looking forward to the Towbar pictures.

Thanks, Stephen

A J type it is, they could be factory fitted but mine came from a Hunter GT (engine from a Rapier) A bit of fettling was required to swap the bell housing and input shaft for the Commer ones but once that was done it fitted a treat and even the Hunter GT prop fitted without modification.
