gearbox oil

thanks for that,had the box out at weekend to do the corr plug behind the flywheel lost most of oil when we put the box back in.cheers again

be good to see your commer round Gloucester our old one is floating around glos somewhere its chocolate and cream and looks awfull but then when we had it, it was pastel pink and looked bloody awfull then too! if you see someone in a white suzuki vitara or morris minors waving like a loony thats me or the wifey[8D]
 
hi charlie,will keep an eye out for you or wifey.the pink commer i think is in the forest area some where,i was talking to friends the other day and they had seen said bus driving round the forest.mine still needs a bit of work to get it running properly, when i do we will have to meet up in tewksbury.[8D]
 
I asked the very same question about gearbox oil a few weeks back and was advised to put in straight 80, despite all the official literature telling me to put in 20/50...a rock and a hard place comes to mind...anyone had practical experience of this??

ive found with the morris's i run that they suggest engine oil in the gearbox and have had many miles of trouble free motoring but when i tried a modern gear oil i had nothing but trouble, the manufacturers know what they are doing so just help out by buying the quality 20/50 not the recycled chip fat that asda advertise for three quid
 
The original lubrication chart recommends single grade oil(Shell Super 100)for all climatic conditions but if anyone has had good experience with 20/50 then let us learn from it.

Id stick with the monograde unless youve had your box recently rebuilt to OE tolerance, and even then personally I would.
In any event its difficult to find 20/50 oil without acid additives, I think only Castrol & Comma still do a classic recipe, and acid additives are definitely bad for the bearings in the O/D, shortening their life considerably.

this is a bit of a debateable subject either way [xx(].
mini,s share the engine oil with the gearbox-20/50.
engine oils are not extreme pressure rated to cope with the stresses in gear teeth.
i use ep90 for most things, so long as its a good oil,for engines use api/sh or api/sj rated then just go for it :)
