gear problems

i changed the oil in the gear box yesterday and all seemed fine.then today it got harder to get into gear now it wont go into 1st and 2nd unless the engine is turned off it will start up and go if you do this and can just get into 3rd and 4th. if i put it into reverse and start up it wont come out gear till i turn the engine off.
any clues cheers

was it all working ok before you changed the oil?

have you over filled it or under filled it? how did you decide on the correct level of oil when filling if thats not a daft question?

have you checked the master and slave cylinders to check for leaking clutch fluid?

yes was working fine. i filled till it started coming out of the filler plug. it says on the manual that it is a combined filler level plug.
i checked the level of fluid in the master cylinder next to the clutch pedal and topped it up but if in gear i can start it up and clutch works then.
the oil i used was 20w-50

you say you topped it up...was it low? it should'nt really need topping up unless there is a leak somewhere? i would check very carefully for leaks especially the slave cylinder and all along the pipwork back to the master. ....i'm guessing you didn't fill it right to thr brim?

The length of time the van has been standing it may be beneficial to bleed through with nice clean fluid....just double check it's not over filled 1st as that would cause a problem.

failing that then possibly the clutch pressure plate could be breaking down (corroding through lack of use and age) therefore not giving enough purchase when you are pushing the pedal ...no adjustment if so! .....Speedys do a 3 part clutch kit for about £60, not worth changing the parts seperatly as works out more expensive and the gearbox has to come out[xx(] ....not that bad, if I can do it in just over a day then anyone can:D:D

yes cant see any leaks but will bleed through new fluid see if that works

looking at my slave cylinder the bleed nipple is at the bottom surely this isnt right as air will be at top. do you think i should turn it round

Sounds like a clutch problem. Unless you disturbed the gear linkages at the g/box :)

thanks for all help, turned the slave cylinder round and bled it and all seems fine.

Glad it was something so simple, I had a similar problem with my Mini's brakes - it took a little longer to figure out[8)]
