fuel starvaton ??

:DHi

I read a great deal of problems on here about rough running at high speed well 40 MPH any way and there was some mention of fuel tank problems Gunk inside etc.
Well i have a problem with my PB highwayman called Betty, she runs fine at "high speed " its just in traffic she runs out of fuel (no fuel in fuel filter near carb) and it takes ages to get the fuel back.
Also if i take her on a run and then leave her for 20 mins then she starts up on whats in the carb then cuts out no fuel again.
Bettys a bit different from normal Commers as she has a LPG conversion i have removed the solenoid for cutting the fuel off when LPG is being used and replaced it with a peice of pipe.
untill today she had an electrical fuel pump with still made her cut out (starvation) i dont think the electric pump had a one way valve as when you switched the engine off the fuel in the fuel filter disappeared after a short while and again had problems starting fuel pump not new found it in the van when i bought it .
i have checked the fuel lines which seem ok.
when the pump (electric stops pumping and cliks quickly) i have pulled the fuel line underneath of and sucked on it ! bad idea as i got a mouth full of fuel so im sure the tank isnt blocked ?? or is it any ideas ?
i have had a fuel can in the back straight to the electric pump it seemed to run better but again when you leave it it runs out of fuel .
A last ditch attempt i have disconnected the electric pump now and fitted a brand new mechanical one the fuel doesnt disappear now when i leave it and when she ticks over there is a small amount of fuel in the filter and gets replenished when she needs it.
ive cleaned the carb out as well.
Any one out there had similar problems ? do you still think there is a problem in the tank ? i didnt think so as she would run out of steam at high speed as well ?
i will test her again soon and see if i have any further problems.

any suggestions/ ideas gladly welcome

Regards Amos and Betty :D

worth checking that its not vapour locking and also that the tank breather is clear :)

Out of interest where was the electric pump mounted? to get a decent suction it should be mounted within about 12" of the tank and as low as possible. At least that's what it said about the Facet pump I fitted to the Mini.

hi panky your right about some pumps . but some are push and some are pull . iv mended a hotrod for some one who got it the wrong way round .. & the pump was perfect just not 4 that application as it sucked like a bas__rd but could not push the fuel fast enough .. changed the location ; perfect

Hi
Thanks for the quick replys the electric pump was fitted under the drivers seat n the engine bay ,will be taking her out for a quick run today and will see how she goes and let you know

Regards

Hi :D
took her out for a run yesterday with the new pump on seems to run fine now, still need to sort the fuel cut off for the LPG she has a solenoid under the floor which cuts the supply to the mechanical pump, not sure if its a good idea to have the pump running dry of fuel when on gas ? although this is how the system was designed which should be ok but surely after a while the pump would break Any ideas out there or should i move the electric pump a lot closer to the tank and disconect the other pump ? what you all think ? whats best ?

thanks again
Amos :D
