Fuel pump slimey gasket

Have managed to trace my petrol smell (mostly because it got a lot stronger yesterday so easy to spot)

Petrol was leaking from under fuel pump glass bowl, took it off and gasket seems intact but there was a load of grey slimey gloopy jelly stuff around top of gasket (petroleum jelly?) cleaned this out and put bowl back on. I will probably look at getting replacement bowl gasket in case old one has gone too hard, seems to be easy enough to replace but have left in place for now as don't have anything to put back in its' place (and need to keep driving it if I can)

Haven't driven it far yet but seems to have stopped leaking so far. Is the slimey jelly a sign of something wrong somwhere or is this common? I cleaned out bowl a few months back and removed some slimey jelly then too.[xx(]

I remember Paul said Nomads fuel pump and pipes where full of the stuff, like Martin says old unleaded can go like this [xx(]

True, whilst driving through Devon my fuel pump filled with the stuff, and blocked up the filter as well, brought me to a standstill in the middle of a busy roundabout!:I..i blew it out using some spare fuel line i had and had no further probs...bit of a mystery really [?]

mmmmm, curious, Bessie gets through plenty of petrol:I and I have been buying it from different garages so gets pretty empty then refilled often from different sources.

Haven't been able to get time to take tank off yet, will have to see if anyone has posted one of those sticky throw-at-the-wall-and-it-slithers-down toys in through the filler pipe[)]
