Fuel gauge

Hi there,

Posted this a while ago, but only just got round to doing anything about it.

I have bought a new tank from commer Chris complete with sender unit, however when I switch the ignition on the fuel gauge shoots over to full.

I have tried it with the tank hanging down, but no joy. The only thing I have noticed is that if I scratch the fuel gauge wire on the underside, it sends the gauge back to empty.

How does the sender unit function? Could it be the fact that the camper is positive earth that's causing me all the problems?

Please help before I get the sledgehammer out!!!!!!!

it sounds like you got a permanent live with no earth on the guage:I[?]

Well I think I may have found the root cause of my problems, the dynamo. Bought off of eBay was a negative earth type rather than positive earth so reversing the polarity of everything.
However I've put an old dynamo on from my minx that was definitely ok and it has presented a whole new set of problems.
The ignition light is permanently on but when I switch the ignition on the red light goes out and the oil light comes on.

Any ideas anyone

Are you sure it's positive earth? that's the first Commer I've heard of that isn't negative.

Definialy not an electics expert but maybe the reverse polarity has damaged the control unit:I
I'm also wondering if the new sender is only suitable for neg earth.

10 out of 10 for panky, control box points welded together, I've split them apart and all seems to be running again, just need to sort the fuel gauge now
