Front Tyres

Well Buttercup failed her MOT. Need two front tyres among other things.

Can anyone recomend a good supplier. She also failed on loads of stuff due to new EU regs on welding. No spot welding now allowed so previous repairs need to be re done. [V] seems welding was Ok in Dec but not in Jan.

In what way have the regs changed? I understood that spot welds are ok where used in the original manufacture, but seam welds are required anywhere else. Where I have replaced panels which were originally spot welded, I have plug welded, but doubled the number of welds. Am I going to have to start all over again? [:0]

We wre told that spot welds are no longer accepted on previous repairs. And lets face it after 42 years she has a couple. But one of the welds is near the petrol tank so it'll be a real problem getting it re done.

We had some loose wires hanging down by the engine. not connected to anything but they are no longer acceptable and will have to be removed.

Buttercup has a tow bar with the standard 7 point socket.. This has to be a 13 point socket now so we're going to have to remove the tow bar. Never used it anyway.

I'm sure there are loads more changes but these were the ones that came up. She went in for a pre MOT check so we have three weeks to do the work before her real MOT

continuous seam welding being acceptable for patch repairs

is what they want now but our previous repairs were spot welded which is now not OK

10. Acceptable methods of repair, and onto following page explains spot vs seam

I would go somewhere else, that is classic friendly. I have never heard of having to change a towbar socket for the mot [?]

I'd have to agree, that does sound a bit petty, however I know the family run MOT shop near me quite well and they've let slip a few little things around MOT's... One of them being that with this all recorded electronically now the ministry can compile all manner of charts showing trends in testing stations and one of the things they do is if there's an obvious fail they go to town and list every little thing (that may on another day perhaps be an advisory or even a quiet word if the obvious fail wasn't there). This balances them out in the tables meaning they don't draw attention if the pass rate at the garage is higher than most... Does that make sense?

These things were brought in this year I thought - particularly the electrics etc. - I posted somewhere!

Well glad we sorted all that out - now.

Where can I get two new tyres.

Found some on internet but as we've just had all the welding re-done money a bit tight so does anyone know a good supplier for tyers. [?]

I got mine from a local tyre place (not one of the big franchises). They are light commercial ones and cost about £70 each inc VAT, fitting and ballancing. They seem to be pretty good quality.

Cheers for the tips.

Got two new retreads on e-bay for 75 quid. Looking good for the MOT. Just need to tidy wires and take off tow bar.

Summer is coming.

Tow bar electrics are now part of the Mot...but not until April 1st (very apt) Also split ball joint and TRE rubbers are now a fail as is loose or bare wiring, inner cv gaitors and various other petty items.

talking of tyers...what should they be air wise?

Rach, I used to put 50 psi in all four of Peggy's, not sure if Autosleepers are different.
