Got through the MOT OK yesterday but running so rough that I didn't think I would even make it to the garage. First run out after several months off the road, started fine but when it got warmed up it seemed to be flooding (ran better with the air filter off). Chap who did the MOT said it may be an o-ring in the carb that's perished so helping itself to fuel. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Also having difficulty starting when hot and excessive fuel consumption.
Definately an option I'm considering but just want to be sure I have the source of the problem before I shell out £140.

You will save £140 in fuel in no time if you bin that old carb
There terrible. Along with fitting the carb fit new plugs,leads,cap,rotor and if you want to push the boat out and have a really smooth running and trouble free commer(well as trouble free as your goin to get lol) fit an electronic ignition best thing i ever did

First check that the choke linkage is not stuck on
then it could be a sticking float needle, which can sometimes be sorted with a few hefty taps with a screwdriver handle to the float bowl. this is the most likely cause if its been standing a long time
If this fails then strip and clean the carb

Sounds like its running v. rich as Tim says. Jammed needle or valves need adjusting.

Stripped and cleaned the carb last night, quite a bit of muck in there so hopefully that will do the trick. I've seen a gasket set on ebay but does anyone on here sell them? (Zenith 34IV)
If its an old stock ebay one dont bother with the rubber diaphram that comes with the kit as it will be perished leading to more running issues.
