Flame arrestor

So still fitting air filter hose etc. My flame arrestor is at end of long pipe plonked on ‘shelf’ in front of rad. Moving it and a little water was sat in it and taking it apart the filter was clogged with that ‘icecream’ stuff when oil mixes with water. My questions being.
Is that a bad sign?
Does it have to link back into the air filter?
Thanks

The flame trap is there because of the faint possibility of a back fire in the carb igniting vapours in the crank case. Most have been dumped over the years and the pipe run down the side of the engine to let it vent low down. Routing the vent pipe to the filter housing usually results in the filter eventually being clogged with oily gunk too.
The HIF44 has a vac connection, that you've probably blanked off, this is used on some engines to connect to the crank case vent to draw the fumes into the engine to be burned. You could go this rout if you wanted to but it would affect the mixture and possibly need a richer needle in the carb

My Commer engine didnt have a mayonnaise problem untill I connected a catch tank to the crank vent. This was a vain attempt to recycle oil mist lost to the atmosphere. It filled up quite quickly with water, mayo and not much oil. I cured this by ditching the catch tank pronto.
