engine repair

Well I've been brave enough to get stuck into getting my van running again after it died last year from blowing hoses off and getting very hot
I compression tested it and got nothing on all cylinders so guessed that I was either using it wrong or its no good ( its new but ive never tried it before ??? )
So I got stuck in hoping to find a damaged head gasket but when I got the head off the gasket looked good so I checked the head with looks ok but has obviously had plenty of water through it as its all furred up inside and out of the exhaust
port's
On the inlet side before the valves they all look like they have had water in but one cylinder is worse than the others
The top of the block looks fine and there was no standing water on any of the pistons
The bores look ok also
So what do I do now ??
Can I test the rings with oil ?
How do I find where the water came from ?
Should I drop the sump and check the big ends ?
The oil is cloudy so defo has some water in it and the level is up on the dipstick but not dramatically
Thanks :([?][?][xx(]

I've heard a few bad reports about the compression testers you can get now[V] I use an old Gunsens one you simply push into the spark plug hole and hold it there by hand.
You may not necessarily see where the gasket has blown and unless you can see a crack in the head or cylinder liner then it cant be coming from anywhere else. Water in the oil has probably got in there from port to port in the head via a failed gasket, the only real way of testing the rings is by either striping and visually checking or with a compression test (if they had gone you would have been burning oil and the plugs would be gummed up), first do the test dry and then with oil down the bores. I'd be tempted to spend a few pounds on a new gasket and compression tester and check again:I.

This compression tester I received as a present, to replace my failing old Gunsens, deservedly got poor reviews on Amazon:(

Cheers guys I've made a plan I'm gonna try compression tester on another car to be sure its no good but im convinced it's useless
Then clean up all my parts do a ring and valve check with petrol if all looks fine I'll put the head back on with a new gasket and re compression test with one I know is correct
Thanks again and fingers crossed

That's the one I was referring to, a couple of people I've heard of thought their engines were knackered because of them[:(!]

This is the modern version of the one I've got

That push-on type is fine for the Commer but a bit of a stretch on the Beddie without an assistant.

I just checked the compression on the slant engine and got a nasty surprise:(
