Engine earth Strap

Really silly question, but where should the engine earth strap be? I'm having starter motor problems (i.e. it dont work) and going away in it at the weekend

I know its not the solenoid as I changed this yesterday, but could not see the earth strap anywhere.

Any help will be appreciated as it was going to be my first weekend away in the old girl and really dont want to have to take a tent!

Our's is by No1 spark plug to radiator mounting.

As long as its mounted from the engine to the chassis it does not matter where its taken from. Make sure all the connections are nice and clean and use a cable of at least the same diameter as the battery earth cable, any less and you could have problems with accelerator cables melting!

Is the starter jammed? Try a sharp tap on the starter casing or put it in gear with handbrake off and try to rock the van back and too.

Use a jump lead to test if it is your earth, connect one end to the engine and the other to the chassis.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies - all earths good. The starter was knackered, I took it off and tested using some jump leads and it will only turn if I give it a helping hand. I tried cleaning the contacts and bushes inside but will not run on its own. The drive gear seemed stiff to move, so i can only assume it was stuck engaged to the engine and burnt out.

Just recieved my nice shiny high torque one from Ratsport - hopefully that will be well worth the money!

I went through a lot of pain with the starting system worth getting it sorted - I'd be interested in how you get in with hte high torque one

High torque starter is well worth the money - looks beautiful, is really quiet and turns the engine over nice and fast.

Only one thing is that it fouls the dip stick tube and I now have difficulty getting the dip stick in and out - so need to sort that now I have a bit more time.
